How much do letters of rec really matter for the sororities here? Does it depend on who you are?

RECOMMENDATIONS MATTER! Yes, really. #1 thing sororities look at is grades, and #2 is recommendations. You MIGHT get a bid without them, but that would be a fluke.
Forty, thirty years ago, you might not have to ask for them yourself, but that doesn't mean they were not sent. Now, it's CRUCIAL to have recs for every house.
Don't be lazy! Get out there and start asking women if they are in a sorority and if they will recommend you to theirs.

What she said above is true. I do a lot of recs for girls going to Bama. Believe me, they would not dream of trying it without them. Recruitment there is too big and too competitive to chance it. Good luck!

i had no recs and got into a 2nd tier its almost impossible to get top tier without recs

It also depends who the recs are from. Getting one from Mary Grace who hasn’t done a thing since she graduated isn’t as impressive as getting one from an alum who is part of an Alum group and is still super active . If you can snag one from a national officer that’s even more impressive.
