So regarding Sigma Kappa I have two questions:
1. Do they have a house already?
2. Are they participating in formal recruitment? Kinda lost on how that works with them being a new org on campus.

they're in one of the swing houses. they're in the one across from zeta. they probably won't begin any plans to build a new one for at least a few years, the school and nationals need to see high pnm interest and numbers before they even consider giving them a grant to build. and when they do rebuild, it'll pose a question as to where. currently, the lot of the swing house they're in now isn't big enough. maybe if they got the AKA lot they could rebuild a new house there but it's highly unlikely AKA will willingly give up their prime lot. that being said, there's an old building right behind that swing house too that the university might be willing to tear down and give to sk. or sk can move down to where dg is, which is the most likely option. i know pi phi had the option of moving down where dg is but chose to stay squeezed between kd and xo.

and sk is participating in formal rush for IWTs and then "withdrawing" after that and letting any interested PNMs come to them. to me, this seems kind of weird but if it's worked in the past then why change i guess.

it's definitely not weird for a colonizing chapter to recruit this way. I've seen chapters to it three ways:

1. the way SK is doing it now: give PNMs a taste of what their sorority is like nationally, then allow girls to see what the other houses have to offer, and if they drop out of recruitment for any reason or hadn't decided to go through recruitment in the first place, they can pursue SK afterwards. Panhel usually puts a moratorium on COB during the time a colonizing chapter will recruit, so SK has more PNMs to pick from. At a school like Alabama, option 1 is the best way to do it since you get more eyes from PNMs interested in Greek life.

2. They come later in the semester and don't participate in the IWT/Open house round of recruitment. There's usually more info sessions or open events, and a longer moratorium on COB.

3. They come second semester and there's a moratorium on COB during the spring.

There's usually some degree of tabling and asking actives in other chapters to refer girls who aren't affiliated. By participating in the first round, they're demonstrating to PNMs who may not understand colonization that they will soon operate as a fully functioning member of Alabama Panhel instead of being some weird new chapter doing their own thing. I helped colonize my own sorority at a campus last year that was much smaller overall and with a much less intense greek system, so we had more liberty to do recruitment our own way, but since Alabama has so much emphasis on tradition, it's great for their nationals to see how we do it and be able to teach the new girls they get how to recruit the Alabama way.

I’d be really surprised if SK doesn’t already have house plans in the works, if only to show the new PC and panhellenic community that they’re dedicated to being successful. They’re a fairly large nationals and so far seem to be on top of things. It wouldn’t surprise me if the university fixes up the old alpha gam house and asks AKA if they would move there, since that house is basically landlocked and is bigger than AKA’s house anyways. Then the old adpi house and the AKA house lots could be combined.

I agree. I doubt any chapter would colonize at Alabama or a similar university without plans to build a house within the next 1-2 years. It's probably a contingency for their colonization.
