we need more sororities

by: ua active

It's great that SK is establishing this fall but we need more than 1 new house in order to make our PCs a little more reasonable.

What's the deal with these sororities? I'd rather see these than KBG
Alpha Sigma Alpha
Alpha Sigma Tau
Alpha Epsilon Phi
Alpha Xi Delta
Delta Phi Epsilon
Phi Sigma sigma
Theta Phi Alpha

What even are these I’ve only heard of alpha xi........ those are such small name houses they would have an insane amount of trouble garnering interest. Sigma kappa will already have a rough enough time. I agree pledge class size is unreasonable now but I think the gpa minimums for each house are just going to go up

You're not really Panhellenic woman if you don't know our organizations we all learn them before initiation.

Dphie is really the only possibility unless we want to start having unhoused chapters which I don’t think anyone wants. Much more likely is that sorority interest drops off again (which is already happening), we increase gpa requirements, and we’re allowed to be more selective.

I agree more chapters and lower pledge class size would be nice. Not going to happen. The University ultimately is on the hook for the millions spent on every new house. To fund that obligation and avoid risk of a DZ or APhi failing and defaulting, they will keep the status quo Plus SK. There will not be more colonies unless and until projected recruitment registrations top 2500 or 2600– which is several years out if existing plans hold.

Most of these sororities are super small in the south and are rather small in the north as well

If recruitment numbers don't go down or more NOCs don't colonize, it might be worth considering an artificial cap on quota and total like Ohio State used to have, say 100 for quota and 300 for total.

That would exclude so many girls from rush and makes the greek system look snobby and exclusive. But I also hate how big our chapters have become.

Didn't DPhiE present a few years ago? Maybe they'll present again? Would be great to have both Alpha Xi and DPhiE back on campus. I mean if it's a matter of money, can panhellenic come together and help? Cause our chapter sizes are insane and as someone above mentioned, it's hard to build your sisterhood when only 1/4 of your chapter gets to go to events

Serious question...

So what's the problem with a sorority being exclusive? Isn't that the point? That's basically the whole premise of rush, you try your best to appeal to the houses while the houses decide whether or not to keep you one more round.

I kind of understand not wanting to seem snobby to draw more girls to the school and have them rush. But beyond that, I truly don't see the harm of lower quotas... If houses can function more effectively with lower numbers why is it such a big deal if they come off as exclusive. This is kind of like the whole debate over participation awards... Just because you show up doesn't mean you should be awarded, right? So just because a girl wants to rush doesn't mean she deserves a bid?

Idk, I'd like to hear other thoughts...

at the end of the day, sororities are businesses. they aren't going to want to turn away money

The key question is this: with facility costs given the mansions and overhead, what is the breakeven in membership so the houses are financially viable? Until there is clarity on this question, it is hard to argue for smaller pledge class size or more new chapters- get the facts and the. Build the case. Debate 101

Considering Tri Delt, adpi, dg, and alpha gam all built their houses back in 2011 and 2012 when total was around 300, I would say we could stand to lose a lot of girls before dues go up significantly. I would guess that most of the cost past that number is just the additional cost of food, sisterhood retreats, national dues, etc that comes with having additional members.

Until two or three years ago, IU had "bed rush" rather than an across-the-board cap on quota and total—it was completely different for each house depending on how many live-in vacancies they had and whether the chapter allowed live-outs. It resulted in a lot of disappointed PNMs because so many got cut even after pref, but while it's nice that they got rid of it, it didn't have a negative effect on recruitment numbers. I think the last year they had bed rush, about 1800 PNMs went through.
