will sk hurt the bottom houses?
by: LSince PNMs have the option of potentially colonizing with SK, do you think that girls with less options at the end of the week will choose to leave recruitment rather than accept a bid from a house they aren’t sure they’ll like?
#1 by: Not really
SK is going to be a great option for juniors and sophomores who aren’t involved in Greek life but are involved around campus and who want to make a difference right away. SK should be very selective during this process and take only girls who are very interested in them. It’s going to be work but they can really chose their direction. If a PNM isn’t interested in putting in some real effort to help SK grow, she should continue maximizing her options in formal recruitment.

In all honesty, SK will be the bottom house (not a bottom house but the bottom house) for at least the next few years. As the person above mention, it will be an option for upperclassmen. However, it will mainly be an option for girls who have no other options. It will be for girls who got released during recruitment and girls who were left with houses they really, really didn't like. No distinguished PNMs will willingly choose SK over a respected house.
Any active would be lying if they said SK will not be bottom. That's just the truth and I don't mean any of this is a rude way. In a few years IF they get really good pledge classes AND they can develop a good reputation for themselves maybe then they'd begin to move up but doing that is close to impossible... Why? Well, a good pledge class is defined by how concise it is and the quality of the girls they get. SK cannot be picky when it comes to bidding girls because their biggest goal is expanding and growing the colony. And if SK is taking most, if not all, of the PNMs who are interested how concise of a PC is that? And are those quality girls?
You can see this in houses like DG and APhi. Both of which had chapters here decades ago that closed. Both DG and APhi recolonized about a decade ago. And DG and APhi only got a jumpstart because they both started back up in new houses whereas SK will not have the luxury of a new house and won't until they can prove their success. Also, DG and APhi are also still bottom houses. Both have been making some leeway in recent years but it's still a very steep climb. And neither of them have the best reputations either, in my opinion.
Idk. Ranks don't matter but you asked for a breakdown and here it is. If you're rushing, keep an open mind and consider SK to maximize your options.

is it just me or does anyone else NOT want sigma kappa to join campus? i know it's obviously happening but does it bother anyone else that panhellenic just views sororities here as money machines... that's why they enforce such a high bid match rate. there are so many OOS girls who could've gone to pretty much any other big, state school but chose bama for the greek life. pan knows that greek life at bama is a huge incentive for OOS kids, thus making it easier for said kids to join.
idk i would just like to see chapter grow smaller in size. i think they should cap pledge classes at 100-120.

As someone above mentioned this school has zero recent history of houses coming on and automatically being “the bottom house” so I’m not sure why people are so confident it will happen this time. Both aphi and dg were immediately ranked above at least gamma phi if not theta, and that’s because a ton of girls both years decided they would rather be in the new sorority instead of the bottom one.
Now, we have so many quality girls rushing that I doubt the lower houses will suffer that much, but many more PNMs do drop in colonization years than normal years.

DG if I remember correctly went almost a year without a house at all and alpha phi only moved into their new house in 2014 (they recolonized in 2008) so neither of them really had an advantage. Also the OP’s main question was if SK’s arrival would hurt bottom houses and you said girls will go SK if they don’t like their remaining options, which I agree with.
Will SK be bottom? Yeah. But the weaker houses in recruitment will almost certainly struggle with girls dropping them for the opportunity to be a founding member of a new sorority.
