whats the actual price of sororities?

by: realreal

I know freshman year costs more because of new member fees or something. so freshman year whats the total price including dues and any other fees (events or non-sorority outings that your sisters expect you to go to)? If you had to add up all the money you spent because you were in a sorority freshman year what would the total be?
And no I'm not too poor for a sorority, but my parents don't like to spend money on unproductive things (which they consider sororities to be) so I don't wanna just tell them the price of dues and then have a bunch more unexpected things come up

Expect to spend about 7-8 k your first year. It depends on the house. You might spend more because of t-shirts from jnj and swap costumes from Amazon. But, your parents can tax write off your food. If you live in your house down the road, that part can get written off, too, same as your dorm living expenses.

If your parents are still claiming you, they can put your living expenses ( room and board) on their tax returns or refund it out of a scholar share account ( tax free savings). My parents are paying for everything minus my scholarship. My scholarship made coming to Alabama from OOS about the same as my going to an in-state university. I have no loans. They have saved up for years into my scholarshare account. I have to provide them my full receipt from my house so they can break up my food and housing from the total bill.

Note: You will have most of your your meals at your sorority house so your incoming meal plan will be adjusted once you join a sorority. Consider $1k-1.5k is for food.

Going Greek helps lots of OOS students find a home/support and helps them stay here and pay the very reasonable low OOS tuition. To help your parent appreciate your sorority bill, add the sorority cost to your tuition and compare to other college options you considered. Probably still one of the most economical choices for your parents.

For a lot of OOS students it is. Alabama's tuition is not really anymore expensive than any other OOS state school, and a lot of us are here are practically full rides.

If you aren't here on a scholarship, obviously it is more expensive than your own state school, but for what I'm studying, it's a better school thank my State school

actually a lot of oos students here aren't on any scholarship at all. thats how the school makes a lot of its money outside of the football program.

It will vary from house to house but average in my opinion is somewhere around 2,500-3000 a semester. That includes 3 meals a day.

But you need to also remember that you're probably not just going to be paying that flat price. T-shirts, costumes, pictures, alcohol (if you drink), and clothes/shoes (for going out and/or for rush) is very common things that sorority girls easily spend hundreds on a semester. Obviously there are things you can cut out if you are mindful of your budget. And sororities also offer payment plans.

Dues can be more around 3,000-4,000. this just depends on the house.

There are 3 meals a day Monday through Thursday, and breakfast and lunch are served on Friday. While most houses stock snacks and some food on the weekend, this is mostly for the girls who live in the house and do not have kitchens to cook for themselves.

Prepare to use dining dollars or pay out of pocket on the weekends!

don't forget fun events. for dressy date parties i usually buy a new dress which costs me btwn 70-100. but a lot of girls borrow from friends or use curtsy which is a lifesaver when you only wear the dress once. and then you need to buy alcohol for you and your date to pregame with and tbh a fifth of vodka here is $28 (at home for me it's only $15) and you'll go through that bottle in one night and then you'll have to restock for the weekend. But there's usually only one date party a month. And t shirts are only between 20-30 so my parents bought me a new shirt like once a month and if i wanted more i'd have to save up my allowance and pay for it myself but i know so many people who would drop $200 on jnj in one order. just be smart with your money and if you wanna get a job that'll help a lot !

i just went through old papers to find a sheet my house gave me of the chapter finances. so this is a breakdown of first semester for a new member:
- the largest amount goes to facility fees, second largest goes to meals, third largest goes to new member dues, fourth goes to usage fees, fifth goes to initiation fees, and then theres a small panhellenic fee. all this came out to 3.4k
however second semester was significantly less because in my house there was a facility fee you needed to pay again, i think my house just lumps both semesters together at once at the beginning of the school year:
- the largest amount goes to meals, second largest goes to member dues, and third goes to usage fees. all this came out to 2.2k

this is just MY house and keep in mind my sorority is on the lower end. i know other sororities have other fees and stuff so take this with a grain of salt. sororities are costly. and i totally understand why some parents are extremely apprehensive about it because, to be completely fair, it is kind of hard to justify spending 3k-4k a semester just to be a part of a social organization but that's for you and your parents to decide.
