by: NanaannIf I am an immediate legacy to a sorority, will other sororities drop me because of it? Will they think I’m going to go a certain way just because my family member did? Will it hurt or help me?

You having a sister in the house two years ago should not affect your recruitment unless you desire that house and others know that.

The only time legacy can hurt a pnm is f she has an in-house sister on campus. Tbh most houses will drop you before philanthropy but als know a handful of girls that went one house that were in house sitting legacies at another. These were all top girls that were worth fighting for though and they were in state and people knew them well

I am not a member of KD, Kappa, XO or Phi Mu. However, I can assure that my sorority values legacies. We pledge close to 50% of our legacies each year.

If Phi Mu drops a lot of their legacies it’s probably because Phi Mu is very weak nationally so girls who are Phi Mu legacy from schools where Phi Mu is not as strong may not be Phi Mu’s typse of girl regardless of the fact that her mom/ sister/ whoever was in that house

Pmu, Kd, KKG, ddd, xo, AXO drop so many legacies because they have so many. They would fill the house almost if they just took them all. It is a positive factor but if you don’t fit it won’t happen and this is good for all concerned

Are there some houses that don't require that legacies be put at the top of the bid llist if the legacy makes it to pref night?
That surprises me -- aren't those national rules?

There is not a one size fits all definition of 'legacy' among the NPC sororities. Some nationals will allow certain family relations to count as legacy that others will not. For example: granddaughters are legacies with some nationals but only daughters and sisters are with others. Another example is step relations, with varying national policies. DDD's national policy is to let the chapters decide who is a legacy and how they are handled. Cousins and nieces are never legacies anywhere.

I thought legacies always get one courtesy invite back. Then if they make it to pref, they are put at top of bid list
Are there any sororities that don't play by these rules?

Every chapter is different on their legacy rules, but it is fairly common to cut legacies you don't think are a good fit very early so they can maximize their other options.

If you are a legacy, ask your legacy mom/sister/grandma whoever what their legacy rule is so that you're not too surprised when the cuts come. It's not that big of a deal anyways because that is not something within your control to change.
Just know that if you are a legacy to many of the more desirable houses, nothing is close to guaranteed.

So, say my sister graduated 2 years ago and I’m rushing in the fall, it shouldn’t effect me if I don’t show major interest in the house she was in? I’ve heard some houses will immediately drop you just because you’re a legacy? I don’t really want to be in the sorority my sister was so I’m hoping it doesn’t effect me.
