is xo really that selective?

I know of a girl from NY in Chi O (don't really know her too personally) and I don't think she had any connections. good grades, money, all that but no connections.
Did she just somehow get lucky? Or is it not as hard to get in as everyone makes it seem?
Is bonding with the girls and having good stats enough? Or are connections essential?

She did not get lucky. She just clicked with the actives when she went through and they must have been impressed with her personality, her activities and her potential to fit and everything like that. XO did not have the best rush for them because they lost out in the end on some of their top girls but they are super solid and a down year for them is still great. So, for your friend, I would bet money that she was not on the "first list" and probably down somewhere on the second. XO certainly had to dip down in their rankings to fill their class on bid day. Also, this goes to show that it is fake news to accept the premise that OOS (even far OOS) do not have a chance at a top tier sorority. There is no question that the top houses, including the old row houses, have made the change and are filled with many OOS and far OOS (which I notice some on here call OOR, for "out of region"). More on that next.

I think it would be a good thing to start using OOR, for Out of Region, as a descriptive reference. This is because Alabama has become such a larger draw for both OOS and OOR, and in-state is become much less of a key factor in recruitment (given it is still big, just not as big). Many houses--mostly the old row--may have a lot of OOS but not many OOR and so it can be misleading for a house to tout that it is "way more than half OOS" and create the impression that they have a lot of OOR. This is because most or almost all of those "OOS" are from like Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina etc. To me, if a state does not have an SEC or ACC school, it should be considered OOR.

so kinda what you're saying is that most OOR girls only have a chance in XO (or other old row) if the houses' top picks choose a different house?
I'm assuming most of their first list would be in-state or at least southern oos.
