new sorority (not sk)

by: Hmm

Apparently kappa beta gamma, a non NPC sorority, is on campus trying to establish a colony right now. My friend got an email about it and a sister was approached by them at the Ferg. Has anyone heard anything about this? All I know about them is that several of their larger chapters have disaffiliated from their nationals and become NPC chapters. Kinda seems like a red flag org.

Think about the costs and benefits of greek membership to women on many big campuses today. As inclusive of all women students as NPCs are, there will always be a gap between those who desire membership and are invited/bid and those who are not joining.

KBG appears to want to fill a niche for women uninterested in a 'typical' NPC experience, and according to a post above they plan on colonizing on some huge greek campi (Mich OSU Mizzou Indiana Bama). While KBG may believe that's a big step in the right direction toward their eventual NPC membership, it remains to be seen if these new colonies take a good hold and last.

The question is, what do they have to offer to a PNM looking for an alternative sorority experience that SDT or a niche group like ADX doesn't already offer?

Pros:

Less expensive than SDT, which has live-in housing and meals and may still be out of reach of PNMs whose parents can't/won't pay for Greek life.

Unlike ADX, they're a general sorority, meaning they don't have a narrow focus that might turn some PNMs off.

Cons:

They've chosen to affiliate with the UGC, meaning they're going to be mistaken for a special-interest GLO even though they're not. They need to try for associate Panhellenic status if they want to get on PNMs' radar.

Let's face it, they're never going to be relevant socially. At most, they might find a few off-campus frats willing to mix with them. Can they recruit and retain enough members who don't care about all that to be sustainable?

I’d also think they would be both more welcome and more successful if they had told Panhel they were coming or asked people if it was okay to come. Just showing up on campus and handing out flyers isn’t going to build a strong relationship with other groups on campus and it will likely attract the kinds of members who know nothing about Greek life and either put no work into building the chapter or quit when they realize the required work. Reminds me of how Kappa came back to OSU this year even though all the Panhel chapters there voted against it.

KKG at OSU has to have been granted overriding permission from either campus higher-ups and/or the OSU greek adviser to recolonize, and it would be silly of KKG to be doing so without NPC approval, too. I doubt that KKG has made it their new policy to (re)colonize wherever and however they want without following the unanimously agreed-upon NPC (re)colonization rules.

Based on what I've read elsewhere, it sounds like KBG has a beef with the NPC for a number of reasons, which would probably explain the "just showing up." I totally agree, though.

Rather than KBG coming here which seems useless I'd rather see some of the other NPCs come to UA that used to have chapters here like AZD, TriSig or DPhiE

I have a friend in a KBG chapter up north and she told me they have been approached by NPC about joining before. From what I've gathered from her, they don't have quite enough chapters to join yet and are more focused on smaller dues (which would increase if they joined NPC) and tighter-knit communities. They were having problems with chapters closing because they were under poor leadership and their Nationals didn't have proper trademarks, patents, etc. Now that has all been fixed and they are in the process of recruiting more and more chapters and growing their presence in the Greek community. While they definitely won't be top tier here at Alabama, they will offer a way for girls who can't afford greek life/are intimidated by the process of joining an alternative option.

Fake news. KBG and NPC have had beef for decades. They used to be an associate member of NPC (basically probation), and were trying to become a full member but they couldn't get enough chapters, so at the end of their associate term or whatever it's called, NPC didn't invite them to join and there's just been bad blood ever since.

I mean at the end of the day, if it makes a freshman girl find a home away from home does it really matter if it’s panhellenic or not? We have THOUSANDS our girls in our recruitment and hundreds of girls per pledge class. We can use all the help we can get.

But these women won't change quota or how many girls go through rush? They'll just take the girls that get dropped and somehow find them and decide to join... and then those girls will have a below average greek experience which isn't good for UA. Bolstering SDT and getting them ready for formal is much more important than this group who will never get the opportunity to do formal

Yall I don't really think it's far to judge KBG so hard when they are literally brand new. They aren't NPC and righteously didn't have to ask "permission" to come here by NPC. Give them a chance! They have the potential to be successful here if people open up and give them the chance to. The main appeal of KBG that I've seen is that they are cheaper than NPC -- but other than that, they seem like a regular sorority just like the NPC ones. These girls could be different than other KBG chapters that have crashed and burned, and I'm honestly rooting for them because from what I've read in this discussion, they have all the odds against them, and I wanna see them come out on top.

I'm not a fan of KBG because I feel like Greek Life at Alabama is serious, and this orgabization isn't serious. From what I gather they are just approaching girls who may not have a knowledge of how the Greek system works and convincing them to join an unstable organization. Sure they may pay less but since they won't have enough for sisterhood events, formal, swaps, etc, it won't be a true sorority experience. You literally get what you pay for in Greek organizations and these girls won't be able to do much.

I have also read that they expect to get a house with these low dues is also unlikely. Houses cost money, if they don't have high dues/a wealthy nationals, they will not get a house anywhere.

I think they're just looking to rent an off-campus house. As for formals and swaps, maybe they don't care about all that and they're just in it for the sisterhood? Not everybody wants or needs the structure or programming of a Panhellenic chapter.

I go to a different school and even will low dues we throw large mixers, hold annual and high quality formals, win the Greek Week trophy every year, and have more sisterhood and philanthropy than other orgs on our campus. Its called fundraising. I met the founding members of the Bama chapter and they have the potential to do just as well as a chapter like mine in their own respect. They may not be able to compete on a larger scale but, as a school with only one panhel sorority, I don't feel like I missed out on anything and I'm not breaking the bank. Stay positive ladies.

They just announced new colonies at UT Austin and Penn State. As for UT, good luck with that, but I wouldn't be surprised if they affiliate the AXO chapter that got their charter pulled at Penn State. (After Chi O lost their charter a few years ago, they did something similar and reorganized as a chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, the service GLO.)

Yeah — and the KBG chapter at Wake are the same former Pi Beta Phi that was closed for hazing. They got kicked off and came back the next semester as KBG.

Watch out Bama —

Another NPC there (ASA) just got shut down for hazing—it's probably inevitable now that KBG will move in for their ex-members as well as AXO's.
