do a lot of sorority girls work?

by: Worki

What percent work? I feel like it will take too much time when you also have to study and be involved with sorority life

Most junior/senior girls work.. I’m a freshman and I think every member of my chapter’s exec have other jobs.

Most of the people I know have some sort of part time job. Others do volunteering and are more involved in clubs. Most have a pretty busy schedule here.

Yes they do. Almost everyone works summer jobs. About half take a part time job or do something to help afford college and being in a sorority. This is Bama not some elite liberal arts school. We work. Board is overrun by trolls for past year though so I wouldn’t pay attention to half these comments

In some houses no not really. In others sure some girls do. But no one in a sorority here works to help support themselves (pay dues, books, car) They work for going out money and shopping

I've never met anyone that works to pay their own tuition or sorority dues or rent but a few of my friends work part time to have more money for going out and clothes and stuff

How does every girl here afford to live like this? I thought usually private schools are the ones with the insanely rich kids

Most of the kids that go here are probably paying out of state tuition and on top sorority dues..... that adds up to be just as much as a private school. So the kids that do go here from out of state mostly have a lot of money.

You think even the richest houses here live like "insanely rich kids"? Go check out some private New England schools or at least Vanderbuilt or Tulane. Yes my car is 2015 but its just a top tier HONDA. I cried I was so happy I got it as a grad gift brandnew. If you think some part time job that makes less (some times waaaaaay less like me) than $1000 a month or so is living rich you must come from a trailer park or something. I work at a hair salon 2 afternoons a week and make just enough to support going out, some coffee and going out to eat and a little shopping. Also free hair services and heavily discounted products are a huge plus.

There’s not a lot of people here that went to 50-60k a year boarding schools and junior boarding schools. It’s mostly middle to upper middle class suburban kids

I'm in a new row house and no one in my exec has a job. I only know some people who have a job. There's girls out here who judge people for having a job even when it's just for shopping money.

I work a part time job as a waitress and I pay my apartment (700 a month and my car $500 a month while taking 17 credit hours and being very involved in my sorority. It’s sometimes challenging balancing the two but do a ble!

There is no chance this could be close to the truth

I agree that $1,200 seems like a lot to be paying on a part-time waitress salary, but I think the general idea is not incorrect.

I work 20 hours a week, take 15-18 credit hours a semester, and I'm super involved in my sorority as well as a couple other major organizations on campus. Am I busy from sunrise to sunset every day? Yes. Do I manage to have a healthy social and academic life while saving up for grad school? Also yes. It's possible if you're willing to work for it.

and I work with girls (and guys) in houses from every tier this site uses. Almost all of us are working to pay dues and other stuff.

Don't listen to the above conversations, because its pretty common, and the posts above is obviously by someone who is trying to make Greeks look like A-holes.

To answer your question though, it is possible to do all three (work, school, Greek) if you are organized and have a good work ethic.

I have a close friend who pays her own dues, but she doesn't work in the school year, just over the summer. Most of my friends in greek life that work typically have more flexible jobs, like being a TA or doing something for the university. If you're smart and good at school, look into tutoring since you can make bank doing that. It's definitely possible, especially if you save a ton over the summer.
