worth joining the new sorority (sigma kappa)
by: Next year
Okay, so before anyone says anything, I did talk to the sigma kappa- alabama people about my concerns but I want I need is the thoughts of those actually in UA greek life.
I officially decided to attend UA next year! I’m so excited and I know I want to join greek life. It’s been part of my family for generations and I got a lot of positive influence from my late mother. She was part of Sigma Kappa (not at alabama) and would tell me stories of her time in chapter and all of her sisters. She made me fall in love with the idea of being a SK.
I always wanted to go to bama but at the same time, I wanted a school where SK was. Regardless if bama got SK this year, it was still my school of choice. But now they have it but! my question is:
Is it worth joining a new sorority on campus? Will I miss out on parts of bama greek life just because they don’t have a place yet? I don’t want to spend my four years in a sorority just trying to find our chapters identity.

Before someone comes on here and says how sucky SK will be I will say this— yes, it will be a different experience than an established sorority. Starting a new sorority is hard. However with your legacy I think it is definitely something to consider. I really think it depends on you personally— if you were very popular, concerned with how others perceived you in HS, etc, SK might not be the right fit. But the first few years of a new sorority can be really interesting, you get to establish philanthropy events and date parties and swaps (which people are kind of obligated to attend to show support for the new kids). I would google experiences of colonizing and maybe read some greekchat threads about it to get a better feel. Biggest thing is not to let people on here dissuade you if it’s really what you want to do.

The experience your mother had was for her. It was her university experience and time period. You need to choose a chapter for you. It's very nice to have a connection with your mom via the same sorority, but it's not enough reason to rule out the opportunity to join an established chapter with lots of tradition, a big house (important) and a well-seasoned structure.
If it were me, I would keep SK in mind but not any more than all the other chapters.

Okay, just from the perspective from an active in a different house here -
Being a part of SK will not be what you think it will be. The stories your mom tells you about will happen to you in ANY house you join, not just SK. I get it, you like the idea of carrying on a legacy and establishing a new sorority on campus. But it will be difficult. SK isn't even on campus yet and they already have a huge pushback from Greeks on campus... Because the honest truth is that many people don't want a new sorority, they want a lower Bid Match Rate which is a completely different issue. I'm not trying to deter you from possibly joining SK... But I want you to know that your sorority experience will be completely different in SK than any other of the establish NPC houses here. So to answer your question, yes, you will miss out on certain things in Greek life if you join SK. The entire internal dynamics will be completely different, swaps will be different, the sense of sisterhood will be different, leadership will be different, etc... And all of this will be different from the other house for at least a good few years.
Again, I AM NOT trying to deter you from SK. Please keep an open mind as you rush next year. Maybe you'll fall in love with SK, but maybe you'll fall in love with a different house. Keep your options open though!

It's not worth it. Joining an established chapter will be so much more fulfilling and fun for you. Being a charter member would be a completely different experience and so much more work. I just don't think it's worth it even as a legacy.
A lot of greeks on campus don't like Sigma Kappa as it is and there will be a stigma that comes with being a member. This stigma won't last but it'll take a 4+ years minimum for it to fade.

Also, there's no guarantee SK will be successful here. I know DG and APhi recolonized and are doing fine now, they're still reasonably less desired houses, but they're still going strong. However, I feel that SK will struggle to fill out pledge classes with similar types of girls. In all honesty they will be left with many girls who were dropped from all the other houses - and that's the harsh reality. That being said, SK will be in the swing house DZ is currently in for 5 years. They will not build a new houses until they know they will be a successful chapter on campus. It's honestly a 50/50 chance and personally it would break my heart to see my chapter be pulled from campus.

many posters here make good points - it will be time-consuming to be a charter member, you won't get the same experience as joining an established chapter, some members of the community aren't eager about SK, and you should make your own decisions about which chapter you want to join. But that's just the things - this is YOUR own decision. So even if Bitter Becky in XYZ doesn't want SK to come to campus, they're coming. it's final. She has no idea whether or not you're the kind of person who would thrive in a new chapter, who is eager for a challenge, and who wants leadership experience right off the bat. But that same girl is in a sorority that's colonizing at different schools next year too, but would she deter PNMs from considering her chapter?
If you're interested in being in a sorority in general, go through recruitment. If that doesn't work out (whether it doesn't feel right or you get dropped, nobody's business), pursue SK. Neither path is a guarantee, so it's good to keep all options open. Just be realistic with yourself about what you want and what you can handle, and you should find your home!
