sophomore rush questions

by: hi

So how come everyone on this site says that rushing as a Sophomore is extremely hard and you don't have many options, while everyone I talk to in real life who are actually in sororities say that it's actually a lot easier to rush as a Sophomore because of the quota system. I don't get it. I'm getting mixed reviews from people on here vs people in real life.

Let's think about this logically.

People you know in real life are giving you one set of information, and anonymous strangers on a website full of trolls who don't even go to UA, let alone actually belong to a sorority are telling you another. Which do you believe?

On the other hand, real life people tend to like you and care about you, so they might be telling you what you want to hear to make you feel better about your choice, whereas people on an anonymous website couldn't give a crap about you, and will tell it like it is.

Interesting situation. Good luck with that.

The sophomore quota is optional, so, no, it's not a lot easier to rush as a sophomore because of it.

It CAN be easier to rush as a sophomore because you MIGHT know enough girls to make an impact or you MIGHT have an exec connection. At the same time, if you accidentally get a reputation, the whole plan backfires, because now there are sororities cutting you as a rep risk that wouldn't have back when you were still a rising freshman and had never made drunk mistakes.

Recruitment is different for everyone. That doesn't change whether you're a freshman or not. It's not a predictable formula that always plays out a certain way.

I went through rush as a sophomore. My HS grades were mediocre and I wanted to focus on my college grades. My GPA after two semesters/ at recruitment was a 3.45 ( I have since improved as I already learned how to balance my social life and college work my freshman year). I knew some girls in a variety of houses but not a lot. My reputation was clean and I am reasonably attractive. I had a full schedule most rounds. I was cut by a few houses I really liked and some houses that I didn't. I had three houses to pref and got into my favorite.

Had you also gone through recruitment as a Freshman, been given a bid, and turned it down? I only ask because my house, if given an option between two similar people, will always take the Sophomore who has NEVER gone through recruitment before over one who did and didn't take their bid.

We will also very likely drop someone we've already dropped before, unless there was some HUGE drastic change over that year.

No, I did not go through formal recruitment my freshman year. My roommate was in a sorority but I didn't really love her group of friends. I lived in Tut, so I recognized some faces going through recruitment but I only really knew about 10 girls in all the houses. I did fill out the form for COB my freshman year. I was invited to a couple of houses but was not extended a bid. I also was invited to only 3 spring teas that year. Again, this was my own experience. I landed in a "top" old row house when I did my formal recruitment. My pref houses were 2 old row and one new row (all different levels on this site- I liked the other two just fine and would have been more than proud to wear their letters). Also, my house has a once cut, always cut rule. So, the only way we would take an upperclassman is if they have never gone through formal recruitment.
