They've been on campus for around 80 years so their colonization happened a while ago.

How come their numbers fell so low if they've been around for so long? - not trying to bash them, just genuinely curious as someone who is coming to bama next year :)

Membership issues like the one SDT's tend to be a small problem that grows bigger and bigger.
They were a solid chapter that slowly slipped to the bottom, snobby PNMs didn't want to pledge them because they heard they were "bottom", and their pledge classes continued to decrease in quality + numbers. Endless cycle of PNMs thinking they're too good for SDT and dropping rather than joining, which meant every year they got less and less competitive. Not being able to participate in formal recruitment was obviously a massive blow and now they have to juggle with having such a tiny house, too. They are improving now and I'm happy for them but that's how they ended up where they are.
They are a great organization with some really lovely, warm-hearted individuals, but their name has a stigma attached to it that has been a struggle for them to fight, which is why chapters that colonized after them have been more successful. It's easier to start from scratch than to deal with so many PNMs having misconceptions about you.
