What does it mean exactly to be backed by the machine, and why do people look down upon fraternities that are not "backed?"

It's pretty much an arrangement unique to Alabama's Greek system. While there are other schools that have set ups that aren't entirely different, none are near as big, formal or organized, so it's unsurprisingly a bit of a foreign concept to anyone who doesn't know about Bama's system.
