This is hard to answer because my recs were written by a mixture of friends, alumni associations, family friends, and strangers

Will the ppl who got strangers really count? I feel like there is no real value to those letters.

I feel like they should count if people put in the effort to find someone to write a rec. Not everyone is from towns where sorority life/alums are prominent, a.k.a military towns.

for those who requested help from an alumnae association, how did you approach them?

I tried to find local alum chapters then I formally and politely emailed them. I told them my situation (where I'm going to school, how I don't know any alum from the specific sorority, when I need the rec done by, etc) and waited for responses. Some chapter gave me direct emails to specific women in their alum chapter who write recs, some chapters emailed me back and literally told me to find a closer alum chapter (even though the ones I emailed were the closest), but most chapters just didn't respond.

I emailed them introduced myself, sent my info, three associations emailed me back with very useful information and contacts to alumn. Others, told me to find someone myself. Not very helpful!

I think a big thing as to why a lot of alum don't want to write recs is just because it can be time consuming and some women feel that their helpfulness should only be given to those they know personally. Personally, when I was asking alum to write me letters I was nothing but kind and I was always very understand in my emails (I would say "if it's too much then I completely understand" or something like that)... But at the end of the day, most if not all sororities allow for recs to be completed online. The general rec consists of just basic information (name, hometown, grades, school, etc) and then a spot for some open ended thoughts. Which in my opinion isn't too too much to ask of someone. Obviously I'm still an active so I've never written a rec so I can't speak on behalf of whether or not they're a lot of work... But even if it is, I think that any alum who loves their sorority as much as they claim would be more than willing to help a girl possibly join her sorority.

And did whatever I could for the rest including asking teachers, moms JL friends. Anything I could. I did the alum association coffee thing for a few houses. And i went on a few alum coffee dates.
