bid list

by: Q

So, on bid day, if you went to pref at a top house, but were on their third list, where are you likely to go? Like, if you don't get AXO, do you probably go ADPi?

I'm hoping you can clear up a disagreement between myself and my dear mother. After reading this thread, I am pretty sure I am right, but clarification will make me feel better. Here is my (100% completely unrealistic) scenario:

I get invited to XYZ (My legacy house), PDQ, and RST for Pref. Afterward, I rank them PDQ, RST and then XYZ. They rank me on their lists in this order: PDQ (3rd), RST (2nd), XYZ (1st). I would end up in PDQ, right?

I'm a double legacy at XYZ, and while my mom is good with me making my own choices, that second person is insisting that I keep XYZ as long as they want me, through Pref, even if I am not interested in them (Meaning that I don't put them last to have them possibly removed from my schedule). My mom insists that if I go to XYZ's Pref, I will get them as my house, regardless of how I rank them and the houses rank me. She says that no matter what I pick and where I fall on another house's bid list, they always put legacies in their legacy house. I say she's wrong, because it's computerized and computers don't care about legacy status. Obviously I could love my legacy house or get cut by them, or ONLY end up with them on Pref, but I want to make sure I understand how this works. Thanks.

I know several girls who preffed their legacy house and went elsewhere. Your scenario is correct if you were high enough on PDQ's list to get a bid, although your legacy house would be required to list you at the top of theirs.

There's no super secret cabal of people making changes because they don't like the outcome......Or is there?

No, there really isn't. Good luck!

Actually you're both probably incorrect. If your first choice is a competitive house, it is unlikely they will go to their third bid list. Third bid list girls usually get their second choice, unless the are also on that house's third bid list. In that scenario you might get your third choice.

Your mom is wrong. That's not how it works. There's this idea that many PNMs have that they will get a bid to the house that lists them highest. That's not true. You can get a bid to your first choice if you are high ENOUGH on the bid list. But if you aren't high enough, you'll get a bid to a house where you are high enough, in the order of your preference.

THAT is why Mom is right!!!

The houses listed her in reverse order of how she listed them.

She in unlikely to get her first choice, because that house listed her low. So assuming it's a house that meets quota before it gets to its lower ranked girls, you are unlikely to end up there.

No, her mom is saying if you pref your legacy house you get it no matter what. Not the way it works at all

Thanks to everyone that responded!

I actually meant that I was 1st, 2nd and 3rd position on the first bid lists of each house, which is why I said it was completely unrealistic.

I think my Mom accepts that there isn't some conspiracy to make sure I only end up in my Legacy house! Thanks again! See y'all soon!

Computer accounts for legacy in my sorority. You'll get extra points for it if you are

ok ur right the legacy part doesn't matter for the matching, but when the sororities make their bid lists, legacys get an extra point. Your gpa also gets you extra points in my house

The process doesn't begin with your list, it begins with the top list of the houses.

Agree with the comment that it's hard to get in a house that ranks you low.

You will come up first in the context of XYZ wanting you.

Isince you ranked them low, you'd be set aside.

You are not likely to "come up" ranked low on PDQs list. They will fill their quota before they get to you - your names comes up - since you are low on their list.

If you "come up" on the RST list befor they meet quota. You will get placed there. Otherwise it will be back to XYZ.

The house rank is the driver not yours.

The above is correct in general but the strengths of the houses comes into play. If your favorite struggles to meet quota, you may still get it even though they ranked you low.

But assuming all the houses are equally strong, you'd be most likely to get your second or third choice as these houses wanted you more.

Your first choice will fill quota before they get to you.

The house rank is the driver as noted above.
