how important are recs?

by: recs

I know they aren't required but extra credit and everyone says they are important but everyone acts like I won't get a bid if I don't have a rec. I have some to a few houses but only 1 OR house. I have great grades and resume that I upload to the UA Panhellenic website. I am also pretty and skinny and tall (I know that doesn't matter but just an fyi) & I'm from the South!

How many times do we have to go over this?? Old row houses will cut you if you don't have a rec and some new row will as well. Best of luck during rush but be prepared for a lot of cuts the first round if you're coming in unprepared like this

My best friend got a bid from AXO last year and didn't have any recs or know anyone from the house. If they want you bad enough, they will find someone to write a rec for you. Yes they are extra credit but no where in UA Panhellenic does it say that they are required so houses should not be able to cut you for not having one. Good luck at rush!!

That's rare. I'm sure you have to be execptional for that to happen

It's confusing because at the sorority life orientation someone asked if recs were needed and the girl said it won't hurt you not to have them and basically not to worry about it if you can't get them. Luckily I was able to get most, but the information can be really misleading

It is 1000% misleading and yet Panhellenic (at bama and other competitive schools) CONTINUES to act like recs are not necessary.

If we want our recruitment to be more inclusive to first generation college students or first generation Greeks - which we should - then we NEED to be upfront and honest about what is required of them. It's completely unfair to put people new to the Greek system at an EVEN BIGGER disadvantage than they already are.

Also agreed with you, PNW. My mom went Greek at a tiny school in Pennsylvania and recs were not a thing. Same for my older sister at a state school in New England. Thankfully I knew actives at SEC schools and they warned me about recs in time otherwise I wouldn't have known people actually needed them - none of the sorority women in my life had.

Panhellenic needs to address this. That is absolutely unfair to tell PNMs they don't need recs.

This will never get addressed. Rush is it intended to be equal and fair.

The flipside is, very capable and wonderful girls end up in "other" houses.

Don't cry over not being in houses that "play a game".

Apprecaiate that you will end up with better girls because certain houses are locked in antiquated ways.

And please, ignore GR ranks. They have no bearing on reality - particularly beyond Bryant Denny and University.
