Considering this is Birmingham's is: "135% higher than the average of crimes committed in Alabama, 183% higher than the national average" I'm feeling pretty good. No one's pretending tuscaloosa is a utopia.

I mean, good for you?? But I fail to see how better lighting and increased police presence could hurt.

When women at UA tell you they feel unsafe walking around at night, please BELIEVE them instead of insisting it could be worse.

Ok well first of all I am a woman so duh, in my three years here I have personally never once felt unsafe but if a girl ever told me she did I'm not sure why I wouldn't believe her. Also I don't remember saying that I was against lighting or police presence (both of which have improved since I started in 2014 by the way). I just don't think tuscaloosa's stats are actually that bad.

Your crime stats are wrong. Tusvaloosa's violent crime rate is less than half of what Birmingham's is. And Birmingham is a safe city. If you don't feel safe in Tuscaloosa, then don't let the door hit you on the way out. Bye Felicia!

You are such a stereotypical millennial cry baby thinking thinking it's everyone else's job to protect you and make sure you're comfortable. It's your job to look out for yourself.

Call UApd and ask them what they think about The suggested measures . You will find you need to shut up bc they Support them and see the need.

Bye to you Felicia. Who argues over safety ? Geez

here is the problem--uapd wants more lighting along the strip, behind the strip and surrounding areas. They want to protect students and see the need. Those areas are under the domain of tuscaloosa pd to patrol and the city to light. If you are concerned, please contact the administration and urge them to get this done ( they influence everything in tuscaloosa) and the tuscaloosa city council and mayor. Everyone with a brain wants safety for themselves and their fellow students... the girls I know who were attacked were not drinking, they were returning from exercising.

This is not about having a private escort or expecting someone to be your babysitter. This is about doing your freaking job which is to protect the community.

On that note, is there a community watch or something to that effect?
