Pretty much all the southern states have more girls go old row than new row although it's most prominent with girls from AL and MS. "The south" is a pretty broad geographic region, though, so the further you get from Alabama the more girls tend to be 50:50 and eventually almost entirely new row.

Old row is kinda defined by the weight they place on their historic reputations as the strongest sororities at UA, but that reputation/culture matters less and less as you get away from the deep south.

Whether you go old or new row, the experience is what you make of it. Each and every Panhellenic house at Bama has it all there for the taking. If you want to take it and get the most out of the experience.

Non-Southern OOS tend to go new row and Southern OOS and in-state tend to go new row. But those are just very general patterns. There are tons of non-southern OOS in old row and tons of southern OOS and Alabama in-state pnms going to new row. It is all very individual.

Whoops. Southern OOS and in-state tend to go old row. Sorry.

I see very few pnms from California and other west coast states going old row. There are some, but it is pretty rare. Same for girls from the Northeast (but more of those go old row than west coast).

Truth is...girls from far away, northwest, midwest and northeast largely go New Row! Yes, there's plenty of exceptions...but warning PNMs from far away...don't get your hopes up for Old Row. Old Row prefers in-state and neighboring states. If you DO get a bid from Old Row...watch out! You won't have the same experience. Old Row tends to be cliquey and this is only natural. Love Old Row but it's just not for everyone! That's the truth!

It is true that pnms from distant oos that do not have much "southern girl" in them can tend to be marginalized in old row houses. you see old row northern girls out a lot with new row northern girls. when i see that i wonder if the old row girl sometimes wishes she did something different. but who knows.

I'm a Virginian. I never see Virginia mentioned for southern placement, which I find weird, since I grew up less than an hour from the Capital of the South, Richmond.

Is Virginia considered too North to be Southern or something?

Virginia other than metro D.C. Would be "southern OOS" as that term is used in this thread. D.C. Area is northern like Maryland, Jersey, etc

Nope NoVa/DC/MD is traditonally & historically considered Southern. Philadelphia northward is "true East Coast" and known to be Northern!
Now if you want to talk about the I-95 Corridor designation then
you might have something.

Thanks for the info. My area is more southern and conservative than the NOVA area for sure. There's a reason we call it Northern Virginia. LOL

For the love of god would someone please explain what it means to be "southern" besides the area that you are from. So sick of this am I southern enough bs. Girls should be judged on their resume not where they are from!

It is both geography and cultural. You can be from the south but be "northern" in how you have been socialized. You can be from the north but raised "southern" so to speak. The term as used on this board is not that much of an exact science. PResumptions are that girls from the actual south are "southern" in culture and girls from northern states are "northern". Posts on here that are good share the common view that a southern state like Virginia is sort of an exemption, as there is a presumption that somebody from the DC suburbs is "Northern" in their orientation/culture/socialization.

Is that so difficult to understand?

I agree girls should be judged on resume, but the resume does not inform about fit. So what a girl is like on paper and in photos is only a part of the equation. Experience and presumptions and prejudices in how northern girls "Fit" in certain houses is what many people are talking about on this board. It is useful information for pnms to set expectations and prepare themselves.

No it is not that difficult to understand but I was looking for specifics not just stereotypes and assumptions. No need to be rude just asking a question.
