recs
by: Seriously
I am from out of state, non-southern.
I have had a girl from my high school who goes to Bama tell me that her recommendation letters really impacted the houses she got during rush. And the old row and top of the new row houses where she had recs kept her, but she was dropped by the houses where she didn't have recs.
She would have had a great resume on Grades, involvement, and dad's occupation, and she is attractive and put together and very easy to talk to as well
I have heard others say that if you have "all that", the recs don't matter
can someone shed some light if girls without recs get over loked despite their credentials or if they have a great credentials, it will get noticed anyway?

- Lol first of all, your dad's occupation plays no part in you getting a bid. We can tell if you have money when you walk into our house and if we're still unsure, a simple Google search on your zip code can tell a lot.
- I think it was just a coincidence that the girl you know got dropped from the houses she didn't get recs for. You need to realize that rush is very competitive, so even a very well rounded PNM may be cut from a house that has better prospects.
- PNMs who are well rounded and are essentially the complete package will always be asked back, regardless of whether or not they have recs for certain houses. It seems like the girl you know was definitely a good PNM and wanted by many houses. That being said, are you sure she just didn't have a full schedule? If a PNM has a full schedule, which it seems like since you mentioned she got asked back to OR and NR houses, then the houses she ranked last during voting automatically get cut from her schedule, so they didn't drop her. It could also be possible that she didn't have a full schedule and she just didn't click with girls in the other houses and dropped her.
Overall, recs will not make or break you. If you're wanted by a house, they'll keep you regardless of whether or not you got a rec. But recs look great on your part! It shows you're serious and knowledgable about sorority life!

It's a policy at my house that if you do not have a rec, you are dropped after IWTs automatically. It shows us that you didn't make an effort, so you must not be interested in us. It's nothing personal against you, but we have three ways of weeding out girls:
1. GPA
2. Reputation
3. Rec
If your grades are good and you have a good reputation, why would you just throw away a house because you were too lazy to get a rec? Get a rec for EVERY house and then get an extra rec for EVERY house in case something falls through with the first.
If you don't have a rec, you WILL get dropped after first round.

Nearly 3000 girls show up over two days during IWT
At the most competitive houses, competing for girls with grades and reputation, the absence of a rec at a minimum would make you impossible to find.
We can't go around with that checklist and simply ask what are your grades, but of your activities, etc. yes it may come out then any number of ways during a brief conversation, but a top houses there are plenty of girls ahead of you because they have a rec, two recs, reached out during the contact period or know us personally
The looks focused houses maybe can find you in a crowd if you fit what they are looking for.
But your friends experience of being kept by houses where she had letters and drop the baby ones were she didn't make sense for me. Especially if you were talking about the better houses

I'm an active in a different house and I know my house doesn't have rules about rec like this. We look for good grades and involvement, if you don't have a rec then you don't have one no big deal...
What I'm confused about is why does Panhellenic not tell this to the PNMs? Like if certain houses have a requirement about recs, then why does Panhellenic say they're optional? Seems backwards and almost sly. Anyone have any input??

im not from the us, and going to bama this year. obviously rushing. i emailed panhellenic and they said they weren't necessary???? i am feeling super confused rn???? it doesnt mean that im lazy, but asking some random on the internet for a rec wouldn't look good as they don't know you at all. so what i can do?

IWhats in the rec is more important then who sent it. Unless you're talking about a very influential alumna.
I'd say also that a rec is not going to help a weak PNM.
The requirement is really at the better houses or it is required, but you were also going to need the right credentials as well
My experience Match well to the idea that Rex are important in the top houses.
I certainly don't know exactly which houses have "the rec rule". For me PhiMu was a tough one to get because it's not that large nationally, and I couldn't find a KD in my network. Both IWT drops.

My guess on who has the rule, based on what I recall about girls drops at IWT and what pnms said and moved on -even one more round
Has the "rec rule" requirement at IWC....
XO
PhiMu
KKG
KD
I remember girls moving forward with AXO Who claimed not to have any rec. could be mistaken though.

I do know she had a full schedule but she got dropped by two houses that she liked. I think after I WT. one that later in the year - when she met girls from the house - she thinks would've been a good fit but she didn't have a rec
Don't get me wrong she loves her house but I think it's her one what if. And since she got dropped at IWT
Wonders if a rec would have gotten her noticed.
I am trying to make sure I get recs to the houses I may like but have a few gaps and I'm wondering if it's a must
Her mother went to a different school, and she really didn't like her legacy house at Bama, but I do know she kept getting them through sisterhood, even though she kept rating them low.
Other than that I think she was getting what she ranked high and had a good experience. I know all the houses she got at pref she had solid recs from active alumni
Thanks for responding\n\n\n\n\n
