some old row cuts

by: cuts part 2

I ended up very happy but am curious when people on here were cut by sororities like alpha chi, chi o, and alpha gam. i liked them in rush and never have asked anyone else their experience, but I am curious looking back on all that now.

i'm in a new row house and love it... i was cut by alpha chi and alpha gam right after ice water teas. I'm from oos, i had a 3.4 unweighted gpa, fair amount of good extracurriculars. multiple actives spoke to me in both of the houses and i think we had great conversations but i think i was probably cut from alpha chi because of my grades and cut from alpha gam because I'm not from the south. i also didnt have recs for either of these houses.
i was cut from chi o after philanthropy. same with the other two, i spoke to multiple actives each of the days and i feel that we had good conversations. i also had a very strong rec and the lady who wrote my rec actually called the rush chair directly to speak on my behalf. i was probably dropped because of my grades (maybe?) and because I'm not from the south.
honestly i think there's a huge bias towards oos (northern & western) girls. i get it, this is alabama, tradition is important, and old row sororities really want a heavy influence of southern girls... but it's kind of ridiculous. I'm sure lots of other girls who were just like me got bids over me only because they're from the south. idk, its just kind of weird and annoying. i mean i love my house I'm in and wouldn't change it for the world but i would've liked to see these houses be more considerate and not just drop girls because theyre not from the "right" area.

I'm from the south, had better grades than you, and was still dropped from those three houses at the same times you were. Sometimes it just happens. It's less of being from the south itself and more about already knowing girls in the houses. I did not have connections in these three particular houses and it sounds like you probably didn't either.

lol but that's still being biased to where a PNM is from. obviously, a PNM like me from the north isn't going to know anyone well enough in a southern-majority house to pull me through. my point is that most old row houses in general don't consider grades or involvement too much during rush. they'd rather have average girls they grew up with rather than a new girl from a place they've never been who has respectable grades and involvement.
you have to be a very outstanding PNM to get a bid from some old row houses if you don't have connections and i think its just weird idk...

I get what you're saying but I think it would be odd for houses to drop girls they already know and like in favor of someone they've never met before rush. If that's the definition of a southern bias to you I guess we had different definitions which is fine

what i mean is that some old row houses don't take an objective look at girls during rush. they'll always give a bid to a close friend, no matter if she has bad grades, a bad reputation, etc... but they'll rack their brains over whether or not they should give a bid to a well rounded girl they don't know. i understand you want a house to be filled with girls you already know, but its to the point where some houses are literally choosing connections over grades, involvement, etc.

You were cut from Alpha Chi and Alpha Gam because you didn't have recs.

I'm from the west coast, had a 3.6 GPA and decent (but not amazing) involvement in high school. I was dropped from every old row house besides Alpha Chi after IWT and then they dropped me after philanthropy. I'm really happy with where I ended up and genuinely do think it was the best fit for me!
