gpa vs good sisterhood

by: Saban

Do sororities care more about GPA vs having a better sisterhood? Because it looks like GPA is the only factor. I feel like I would rather recruit genuine girls based off conversations with them/their personality reguardless of their GPA so why are sororities so focused on that? Is it just because it's THAT competetive?

Not hating! I know GPA is important and not trying to degrade that, but I want to understand why it's so important in a sorority membership

GPA is an easy thing to cut for. Thats why it is important. Theres thousands of PNMs. And hundreds of them are girls from in state, who are legacies, who were the captain of their sports team, are double majoring in marketing and accounting, volunteer at the homeless shelter on the weekends, and were the class secretary. How can we easily get down from thousands to hundreds of girls from round one or two to the next? GPA! If I go ahead and say we are not taking anyone below a 3.5, I still have 100s of awesome girls to choose from for my chapter.
Seriously, you all are stellar and sweet, but we HAVE to cut each round. And those cuts have to start somewhere. So we start with the easiest, most concrete things to cut on. No recs and GPA.

^^^ perfect answer. GPA is the most easily quantified trait so even though the is obviously so much more to every PNM than their GPA so it is the easiest place to start making cuts. Also, for girls who are cut for having low GPAs (let's say below a 3.0) even if you are awesome, people with low GPAs are going to be less likely to stay at Alabama and I believe most houses will kick you out if you can't maintain a certain GPA (in my house if you have below a 2.8 for three semester so you can get kicked out) so it is riskier to extend membership to someone with a low GPA, even if they are otherwise amazing

Since y'all are at the end of your senior year, there isn't much you can do about it. Impress them with who you are as a person and maybe someone you talk to in the house will advocate for you even if your GPA isn't great. I know it's hard but don't stress about something you can't change now

Usually, the houses that have good GPAs are the ones with good sisterhoods. In general it's because girls with good GPAs are more likely to be more similar to each other, come from similar backgrounds, have similar values, and are generally more focused on school rather than parties and social events. Sororities that recruit mainly on looks and/or social connections have worse sisterhoods because they have girls who are more drama-loving. Those houses are more split between the top girls and the filler girls, and tensions show.

Your Q... why would houses that recruit based on looks and social connections be more drama loving? You are assuming pretty girls like drama? Very general statement

It's not that pretty girls like drama or anything like that-- all houses have pretty girls. It's that girls who RECRUIT based on looks are more likely to have sisterhood issues, because they're the type of people to judge based on personal appearance rather than other more meaningful qualities.

I understand gpa is a easy thing to make cuts for but don't totally agree with it. At my hs lots of really involved girls, great athletes, leaders who would make great sorority sisters have below a 3.5. Standards in west coast states are much more difficult than southern schools, so a 3.5 in California is different than a 3.5 in Alabama. I know at my school more emphasis was put on being a well rounded student/person over being a 4.0 student. Sad to think really great leaders would be cut because they have a 3.4! I know girls who have volunteered hours, made huge impacts in their communities and excelled in athletics with below 3.5 gpa!

Agree re: the grades thing. I had a 3.2 at my school far OOS before transferring to a high school in Alabama and getting a 4.0 even though my courseload was higher and I was more involved... It's such a tricky situation because you never know which girls worked super hard for that 3.0 (and thus will continue to work hard in college) and which girls didn't work at all but still got good grades (and thus will show up at college with no idea how to study for things and fail.)

At the end of the day chapters have to draw arbitrary lines in an attempt to narrow down the pool of PNMs. Recruitment isn't fair and some people definitely get unlucky but I think generally chapters do what works best the majority of the time.

Your point is very valid and understandable, but the fact remains that girls from far OOS are more likely to go home, and to be honest my house, and others, know that a lot of OOS girls are here to party. Obviously it's hard to distinguish during rush, so we would rather play it safe. It's a hard truth but don't assume you are being cut for grades alone. (Also many girls coming from the west coast have 3.5s and above-- like, a ton, so it's not really an excuse)
