kappa

by: xoxo

First off, I'm going to be completely honest here and come out and say that I'm a Kappa. I don't understand all the hate the my sorority has been getting recently, especially considering tearing down other girls isn't anything the Greek community needs more of. But believe it or not, things aren't always as they are portrayed here on GR.

For those who say we don't care about grades: Our minimum GPA for rush is a 3.3, the highest of all sororities here. The most recent pledge class this year had the 4th highest GPA with a 3.53. That's hardly having girls that are failing their classes.

For those who say we aren't involved: We have girls helping winning some of the biggest awards at UA, leading SGA, being student athletes, doing research, doing tons of community service, acting as presidents/VPs of honor societies here, etc. Heck, our instagram documents a lot of the cool work that our girls are doing if you're curious and want to see more.

Many people also like to say that we don't have a good sisterhood but that isn't true at all. These girls are the ones who have helped me through thick and thin, have stood by my side even when I've screwed up, and will always support me no matter what. I won't deny that there is somewhat of a divide between OOS/in state girls, which can be frustrating, but it certainly isn't true for all girls. Plus, I've still managed to make my best friends despite it. Additionally, never overlook the fact that EVERY. SINGLE. HOUSE has it's flaws.

As a PNM I'd really, really like to know which sororities check your clothes, make you wear make up to class and criticize your body. Does anyone have factual knowledge of this or are they just rumors?

without stating specifics names, a few of the old row houses and the more appearance conscious new row houses

It's the houses that focus most on looks that do this. Read the other threads to see who puts the most emphasis on looks.

I don't want to say specific names, but they usually fall into three groups:
-trying to maintain their hot/pretty reputation
-trying to maintain a reputation of being classy
-trying very hard to rise in ranking

From there you should be able to look at other posts and get a pretty good idea

I know of two houses that for sure check outfits. Like, their mom's are sending and buying stuff and the girls have to send in pictures or bring it in for approval. This is more for cohesive looks than the trendy idea. But, they are having to send in pictures of their shoes and dresses and purchase specific makeup colors to prove that's what they are wearing vs. being given a list and trusting you to get it on your own.

TBH a lot of houses require girls to get their outfits approved... I'm not in a house that falls under a category listed above, and my house requires outfits to be approved because we have a certain theme we're aiming for and so the rush chairs need to make sure we match the color scheme/theme... And I know that's the case for most other houses. A lot of houses only want to approve rush outfits to make everything cohesive and appropriate, but for the most part the girls can wear what they want.

Many do it just to see if it fits with the theme the rush chairs assigned

Looks matter in the greek system, and in life, whether we like it or not. Rush is the first impression that a lot of these girls are getting of the houses so it is important that PNMs and Actives look their best and put their best foot forward. I think I might be in the house you're referencing @Fact (if not my house is very similar) and I don't think its going to kill any girls to get a spray tan and put some makeup on for a week (I wear very light makeup the rest of the year and am happy to put on a full face for rush). To me it seems stupid that houses wouldn't want to make sure that they put their best foot forward so they have a chance to compete for the PNMs they want

It's sad that certain sororities here put such an emphasis on appearance. I completely agree that your outward appearance is the first thing people notice and it is important to look and act your best. However, if looking and feeling your best means that you wear simple clothing and wear little makeup, then a sorority shouldn't be forcing you to do otherwise... Which is why it's so important for you PNMs to pledge a house you feel comfortable and happy in. Don't pledge a house that makes you feel inadequate or that makes you feel like you need to have sun kissed skin/a caked face/the trendiest clothes/the skinniest body all the time just because they hold a certain status on campus.

Pledge a house for the sisterhood. The friendships you make will last a lifetime, but the status is only for four years.

The house I am speaking about is praised for having an "amazing sisterhood" on here all the time. It's not so amazing. There are amazing girls in the house and I have several good friends in that house. Honestly. THEY are amazing. But, the fakeness in their exec accepting of all their sisters is real. Please believe that every house in every "tier" have things they want to improve in their house. How they go about those improvements is a different story.

Both houses I mentioned have Δ's. They have great girls in their houses. But, sometimes they don't make their girls feel so great and they are pushing them to be something different than what they are ( and, what they are is pretty damn good. Why try so hard?).

I am not a kappa but all the ones I know have been so nice to me. I've seen all the hate on here also and it makes me so sad, I know rush is coming up and things get competitive between sororities but there's a place for every PNM and a girl that should be a kappa might hesitate to go them just because of some stupid internet postings?? not cool

Agree!
And it's so unfortunate that gossip, tent talk, and even friendly discussions between PNMs and friends will make a girl doubt her choice or the house that really wants her.

In the spirit of competition we lose a lot of good people.
