pref
by: pnmHow common is it really for girls to go to 3 houses for pref? Like does that happen for nearly everyone or only the really 'wanted' PNMs? If you only get invited back to 2 or 1 are you still guaranteed a bid if you 'maximize your options' or is your chance of not getting a bid much higher?

In my humble opinion, "maximizing your options" "trust the system" is a sham. They tell this to PNM's so they feel better about the recruitment process. Yes, of you maximize you options you are statistically more likely to be in a sorority, but it is not a garuntee. It's a selection process, mainly the sororities doing the section. Not everyone fits in with the sorority life. Girls are dropped for many reasons, sometimes a fluke, grades, looks, wealth or lack of the last 3. However, don't be discouraged and go through with an open mind with all sororities. I'm not saying this to scare you but I wish someone told me this while rushing.

I'd say less than half of all girls who rush show up on pref day with a full 3 houses on their schedule... And of those three houses, it's usually a big mix between the types of houses that are on there. You have to be a very stellar PNM to have be asked back by three top houses on pref, not that tiers matter or anything. The majority of girls usually have 1-2 houses on pref, completely normal.

If you can handle this truth, NPC is moving toward requiring all campuses to allow only two formal pref parties no matter how many NPC groups are on campus. This is to prevent pnms from dropping-out before/after they attend pref parties. It is being promoted to allow "maximizing your options" between fewer homes.
NPC looked at the percentage of women nationwide who listed their third formal pref choice and/or were bid to their third listed house and decided it's such a tiny percentage overall that having a third option at pref was no longer necessary as it was not bringing-in a significant percentage of bid women.
What NPC also understands, thru talking to pnms and recruitment counselors post-recruitment, is a number of women do not even like having to choose between three homes. Recruitment is stressful enough on campuses with many sorority home choices, so eliminating that third choice at pref is the way of the NPC future.

I will be rushing this year. Last year my cousin had a full card every round. She didn't know any girls in the houses. She preffed 2 "top" sororities and 1 upper mid which she was a legacy (another university) to. She got in her #1 house which wasn't her legacy house. All this to say you can have full rounds without knowing anyone. Good luck!

It varies every year, but I'd say about half have all 3 spots filled. The kicker is, often Sorority #3 is that one house you've been trying to drop all week.
If you put all three on your bid card, there's a 33 1/3% chance (and that's a very good chance!) that you'll wind up with #3. Often it actually works out fine, but many new members refuse to even go to the house and give it a try. It's mean of the new member and humiliating for that chapter's members.

There are no guarantees in recruitment, and that's no secret but it's funny how PNMs just don't seem to hear that later when it happens.
