sorority questions

by: PNM

1. How many girls get dropped day by day
2. Who gets the say in who drops you, you or the house? Like if I like a house but they drop me/if a house likes me but I don't like them
3. The bigger the class coming in to rush, do the houses let in more girls or have they kept the number the same each year on how many are allowed in?
4. Do new houses/houses currently under construction get a better class or does it not really matter since all the houses are so nice

Very generically answered:

1) No public day-by-day record is kept. The recruitment method for keeping/dropping is individual and private at each house.

2) Both. It's called mutual selection, but the houses have the greater percentage of choice because NPC GROUPS WANT EVERY QUALIFIED, OPEN-MINDED WOMAN ATTENDING RECRUITMENT TO JOIN A SORORITY.

3) Bid Day Total is decided based on the grand total number of women attending the final pref parties. Those numbers fluctuate on a yearly basis, so the number of bids given also fluctuates yearly.

4) The high-caliber quality of students going thru recruitment means each house gets classy students. Anyone joining a sorority based solely on the physical house they will live in has the wrong attitude about life-long sorority membership.

1. There isn't a set number of girls who get dropped every day. If you're talking about specific houses, there are a few houses that basically have their bid lists made up before rush even starts... So houses like that tend to drop more girls the first few days just because they're already set on specific PNMs.
2. PNMs do not drop houses, the houses drop PNMs. If a house likes you, you will be asked back, if not, then they've thus dropped you.
3. Each house has a quota set by their nationals and NPC. The pledge classes grow in size as the amount of PNMs who rush also grow. NPC here works really hard to ensure that there's a very high bid match rate.
4. New houses do not drastically impact the quality of pledge classes. The only house that has seen a decent improvement because of a new house is Gamma Phi... But as you said, all the houses are nice.

Active which houses basically have their bid list made up before rush even starts??? How would they even know all the girls rushing? I'm coming from across the country and will not know anyone in a sorority or anyone rushing. Will I be overlooked??

how do you know if you're on their "list"

Yo chill lmao. A lot of houses that are considered "top tier" have a good portion of their bid lists made up before rush starts. All you PNMs will have to create accounts for rush and you'll basically have to answer a bunch of resume like questions (hometown, gpa, involvement, etc.) and you'll have to submit a picture of yourself along with it. Houses like AXO automatically cut you if your GPA isn't up to their standard and I know PM cuts hard for looks and wealth. And then houses like KKG and KD cut hard for lack of connections/if you're not from the south. OBVIOUSLY there are exceptions to this! If you go through rush and really end up impressing them then they'll obviously extend a bid to you. And these bid lists they've drafted are not set in stone! Obviously some PNMs that they thought would be a good fit end up disappointing them and then other PNMs they may have originally "overlooked" end up positively surprising them.
Honestly y'all need to relax! Rush is like six months away, so stop stressing. Everything happens for a reason and ALL the houses here are amazing!!! Good luck!

@Abi ask around your hometown (even men) you will find you know of more sorority women than you thought. And just because they did not attend here doesn't mean their influence hurts! Bring your personal grace and charm (and great grades) to recruitment, along with a mind open to accepting the invitation of any sorority, and you'll do fine.

How much of a factor do grades play? I was highly involved in my school government, debate team, cheer and pageants but I only have a 3.0 because my sophomore year I was hospitalized due to illness. Also I attended a private school which had very hard classes.

Many PNMs will have better grades than you. You may not be dropped by all the houses for that GPA, but realize if you are dropped by every house in 2017 your best bet is pledge the library and try recruitment again in 2018.

Lmao stopppp. You attended private school so your classes are harder? Please. You obviously don't understand that public schools aren't what they seem like on TV. The girls that come here that went to public schools had the same exact curriculum and course load as you, the only difference is that your parents choose to pay tens of thousands of dollars.
I'll be completely honest, grades matter a lot. A 3.0 is the official "required" GPA for PNMs but ALL houses want to pledge girls with GPAs significantly higher than that because the idea is that if you had a hard time in high school then you'll probably have a hard time in college, and no one wants a grade risk.

Should I even bother going through recruitment with a 3.0 or should I wait till the next year and work on my grades?

Question 2:
A. If you and a house both like each other, you're good.
B. If a house drops you, it doesn't matter if you ranked them #1, you will be dropped.
C. If you rank a house at the bottom of your list, but enough other houses drop you (see B), you will be invited back. Keep in mind, if this happens, that house has seen something in you that you might not have seen in them during the early parties! Many girls think a house isn't for them, then by bid day they can't picture themselves anywhere else!

And there are lots of great houses on campus!! GR won't let me post the link, but town and country listed the nine best sororities in the country yesterday, and eight of the nine are represented at UA. (And yes, even those not on the list are awesome too! Just saying you have a lot of choices).
