will i fit in?
by: caliI'm debating coming to Alabama from CA. I visited and love the campus and culture. I'm conservative by nature and a little tired of all the bs in CA and look forward to getting out of CA for college. One of the things I want to do is rush a fraternity but I'm concerned that I will be looked at differently because I'm not from the south. Please be honest, will that hold me back and cause doors to be closed to me or will I have the same chance as others to be accepted to all chapters? Thanks for any insight.

Yeah you'll definitely fit in. A lot of kids come from California, surprisingly. As long as you have decent grades, you were involved in something in high school (sports, clubs, etc.), you're at least somewhat wealthy, and you're decently looking then rush shouldn't be an issue, even though you're OOS. Rushing the old row houses will be hard but not completely impossible if you're a strong rushee, but I can tell you now you definitely won't get a bid from DKE, SN, KA, or PhiGam so don't waste your time. The other old row houses take in SOME kids from the West & East coasts but you need to have thing they really want. Otherwise, new row/Jefferson won't be a problem, seeing that that's where most OOS kids go. Sigma Chi, Phi Psi, Pi Kap, and Pike are some really nice new row houses on Univ Blvd. Sig Ep (soon to move into KA's old house on Univ Blvd), Delta Chi, and Lambda Chi are nice houses for Jefferson.
Start to email the rush chairs for the houses you want to rush this Spring/Summer/Fall.
