On Alabama's panhellenic site, it says that spring teas were cancelled this year for high school seniors underneath all of the important dates.

No Spring Teas this year. Spring Teas give an unfair advantage to girls in the areas surround Tuscaloosa/Alabama that can actually make the trip in the Spring as opposed to a majority of girls who rush that come from OOS that can't make it.

A lot of houses with high out of state membership are pretty disappointed about this decision. The excuse from panhel about fairness for PNMs is weak at best- PNMs will end up in a house whether they come to teas or not. The real change here is that houses with high OOS numbers and chapters that are considered lower tier have less of a chance to make connections with PNMs before rush. AXO/ddd/kappa/kd etc will continue to use their hometown pipelines and other resources as they always have and Panhellenic knows this.

This is #5 nails it. But the whining originated with OOS PNMs thinking the teas placed them at a disadvantage. But the reality is that the teas gave OOS a fighting chance with some top houses and actually helped OOS get on radars. The cancellation of teas just makes the connections factor the driver for top houses. Saves money too.

Alabama NPC sororities will no longer have Spring Teas due to the fact that it was an unnecessary expense to all the sororities as well as the fact that it does give unfair advantages to girls from the surrounding areas. Also, of the girls who attended the Spring Teas, less than a quarter of them ended up accepting a bid in the Fall.

Everyone argued that spring teas gave girls from the south an unfair advantage but the advantage isn't that they were able to come to teas, it's that they're from the south. Teas had nothing to do with it

"... so, of the girls who attended the Spring Teas, less than a quarter of them ended up accepting a bid in the Fall."

Wow this is so surprising. It would have thought the women who bother to show up for spring teas would be some of the most enthusiastic PNMs.

That's what a representative from Bama's NPC said...

She probably meant accepted a bid to the specific house whose party they attended, not accepted a bid overall

Which isn't very informative statistic considering some girls attended 10 read.. obviously they cant get a bid to all 10 houses

Also you don't have to be committed to Alabama to go to teas. At that point a lot of girls attending them were probably still looking at samford, auburn, uga, etc. I agree it's a dumb statistic

That is surprising. I guess it makes sense to drop the teas then.
