questions by a pnm

I'm worried about rushing (in the fall as a freshman), as I'm coming from out of state and no one from my area has ever gone to Bama! How do I get my name out when I don't know anyone? And are there certain houses that will drop me simply because I don't know anyone? Will I get dropped because I'm not a legacy? Through high school I kept good grades and was very involved in school and community service, but I can be a tiny bit shy and I'm only average looking. Will any houses want me? Also, if you can, would you mind kind of describing what each house is like and their campus reputation? I've seen the rankings, but I'd really like to know which houses are known for partying and which ones are more known for their involvement on campus. Thank you!

It's a lie that certain houses will cut you if you're OOS or don't know anyone in the house. In all honesty, connections are important to some sororities, but it definitely doesn't hold you back. Also legacy status isn't as important as it once was. Just because a girl is a legacy does not guarantee a bid, so you're fine. If you have good high school grades and were involved houses will definitely want you, also you seem like a sweet girl. A good way to get your name out is to join the rush Facebook group and comment your social media handles on threads and whatnot. My best advice is to relax, don't overthink anything because everything happens for a reason. Also, don't pay attention to ranks. I know on this site it's hard not to be drawn in by the rankings, but I can TRULY say that ranks DO NOT matter. I'm not just saying that just to say it... Ranks and old row/new row status doesn't mean anything besides a way to categorize the houses.

My advise to you would be to reach out to someone you might already sort of know on campus. This site is a lot of parents and bitter people - not everyone just mostly- so you will get a lot of bias opinions. If you don't know anyone reach out on Facebook class of 2020 or above bc there are girls that would love to give you more info!! Best of luck pnm <3

AXO - "good girls," religious, very involved on campus, very competitive, very smart, balanced between OOS/in state, balanced between girls who party and those who don't, good sisterhood
KKG - old money, get in through connections, more Southern girls, tend to party more
PM - pageant queens, very competitive, trendy, rich, more Souther girls
DDD - old money, more Southern girls, very smart
KD - old money, very exclusive to Southern girls, tend to party more
XO - more Southern girls, smart, a more laid back version of AXO & they tend to party more, good sisterhood
ZTA - more OOS, you have to be hot to get a bid, tend to party more
AGD - more Southern girls, very religious, lowkey on campus, don't tend to party as much, good sisterhood
PBP - more OOS, kind of like ZTA but more laid back, known for partying more
ADP - balanced between OOS/in state, religious, very into philanthropy
AP - more OOS, tend to party more
KAO - strong sisterhood, very smart, more OOS, very involved on campus
DG - involved on campus, smart, more OOS, tend to party more
AOII - very, very laid back, more OOS, pretty quiet on campus
GPB - strong sisterhood, more OOS, tend to party more

I want to also mention that every house here has girls that party and don't party. There's no one house that has all the wild partiers and theres no one house that has all bookworms. Also all the houses are involved in handfuls of different stuff on campus - they kind of have to be

By 'southern girls' do you mean like all southern girls or girls from around the area with connections?

Every house takes in OOS and Northern girls, so there aren't any houses that are all Southern girls, but there are some that are predominantly Southern (ex. KKG, KD, XO). KKG tends to take in more girls from the surrounding states of Alabama, while KD tends to take in more girls from Mountain Brooke/Vestavia Hills/Mobile (suburb towns in Alabama). To the sororities that take in mostly Southern girls, connections are important. A lot of girls that go KKG and KD know actives because they went to the same high school, country club, etc.

This is very accurate!! And @Active is right -- there are girls in every single house that do not party. If you want to go out and have a good time, you will definitely have people to go out with in every single house but if you don't, there will also people that don't go out (they just may be a tad harder to find)!

If you have good grades and were involved in various high school extracurriculars a handful of different houses will definitely want you. Advice for rush: You said you were shy - I suggest going out more and trying to have more frivolous conversations with strangers to try and get you accustomed to how rush conversations are. For example if you're at the store try and spark a conversation with the cashier or the person in line next to you. Being able to manage small talk is crucial to rush. Also you said you're average looking... I also suggest playing with your style a little bit before rush (since you do have so much time). Try different types of dresses and see what works best for you body and stick to it for rush. If you want to try a different makeup look, also go for it. You have a lot of time before fall rush to play with what looks best on you. Remember, you don't need to fit into a certain mold - you don't need a caked up face and the trendiest dresses from Urban to get a bid. If a house sees you're put together in your own sense then that means a lot more than another girl in a shift dress and a choker.
