Just curious, why doesn't SDT participate in formal recruitment? It's a shame they don't? Will this change next year? Love to hear your thoughts SDT! I hear some great things about you and can't figure out why you don't formally recruit!

Think about it - you have a chapter of 60 to 80 girls. More than 100 are coming to your house to visit - 10 times today alone!
It's extremely difficult to recruit when your numbers don't match those of the other chapters.
Note that I said numbers - not the love or fun or things done together, just numbers.
Years ago, the chapter and their advisers concluded that they would do better recruiting more on an individual basis.
It works for them.
At one point they did recruit with the other groups. Perhaps in the near future - once the sororities now on the row finish building - they can move back over to Sorority Row, expand their membership, and resume recruiting with the rest of us.
For now - I think there's definitely a place for a sorority of women who don't find formal recruitment appealing and choose to do it differently.

It now makes sense Aunt Gin!

One more question, with all the PNMs...record numbers each year, is there another pan hel sorority exploring colonizing at UA? If so, who?

It's not fair that sororities like SDT, ADXi, AKA, etc. don't participate in formal recruitment, yet try and piggy back on a bunch of Greek events that sororities that participate in formal recruitment do. They need to pair up with other legit sororities for philanthropy events and even homecoming events and its honestly not fair. If they choose to be independent and not participate in formal recruitment then they need to keep being independent all school year. It's also not fair that they can choose to not participate in formal recruitment and let the 18 NPH sororities struggle with accommodating 100+ girls every round of rush. The number of PNMs just keeps going up every year, and yes the 18 NPH sororities either have big houses or are going to build, but the pledge class numbers will just keep going up every year, its just inevitable, so SDT, ADXi, etc. should really participate in formal recruitment. Either that or the university's going to have to bring in a new sorority.

You're super misinformed. I don't know a single girl in a Panhellenic sorority who thinks this way. SDT is the only sorority who can participate in formal recruitment who doesn't anyway. AKA and adCHI are completely different types of sororities.

I agree with @No. Formal recruitment is for NPC sororities and it's not up to any non-NPC sororities to have to take that on because of the ever-growing amount of PNM's; that's our problem and we have to deal with it. And if SDT, an NPC sorority, does not feel that it is in their best interest to do formal recruitment then they don't have to, and there is a down side to that as well that they choose to accept with that decision. And if non-NPC houses pair up with us then so what? We don't really compete with them in recruitment so their involvement is just extra participation in events. It's all good. I hope SDT will start doing formal recruitment, but we'll need another NPC sorority to come on as well. There are only 8 of those left who aren't here already and not all of them could come to Bama and do well because of the significant resources and support needed to establish here. They'd have to be prepared for a huge rush and a huge house and some of the smaller nationals just can't do that.

This is a super misguided and selfish notion! SDT does not participate in formal recruitment for the best interest of their chapter, their nationals, and our Greek community as a whole. They made this change after repeatedly failing to make quota and total, so adding them back to formal recruitment wouldn't solve the problem of our overwhelming number of PNMs. Just take a look at how SDT is treated at Texas; they are repeatedly raked through the coals on GreekRank and PNMs are deliberately cruel to them during recruitment just to get dropped, and their actives don't even want to do formal recruitment. By them removing themselves from formal recruitment, they offer a different sort of sisterhood to girls at Bama who didn't find their fit in formal recruitment, maybe want a smaller sisterhood, and maybe their views don't align with ADChi or AKA. ADChi and AKA don't enjoy full benefits of NPC membership because they aren't a part of it, so to resent them for that is silly, and to refer to any of them as not "legitimate" is ridiculous. Yes, it sucks that our chapters are too big, but believe me when I say it would be far worse for the PNMs and other chapters if they joined formal recruitment!

OP, to answer your question: right now, with all the building and sororities shuffling around among temporary housing, no other group has expressed interest in UA for right now.
Before all the building started, UA Panhellenic voted to open to at least two more groups (if I remember correctly). Delta Gamma came on board. At least two more groups were also interested, but the timing was not right, plus rebuilding had started.
So yes, UA is interested in adding another group but it's going to be two or three years down the road.

A little bit. Sigma Kappa has been here before and is most likely the next one. Sigma Sigma Sigma just established a chapter at Auburn, but it is the only one in the state.

Who's this "Aunt Gin" person and why does she/he think they know everything about Greek life here. This person is probably an old, bored housewife who has literally nothing better to do than research mama sororities and fraternities. Sad.

There are lots and lots of Aunt Gins, honey. They do know everything about Greek life here; in fact, they invented it. They lived it as undergrads and contributed greatly to making this the Greek experience as we know it here, and after they were done as undergrads they stepped up as alumnae so they could make it happen for the next generations. They donate the money, write the recs, advise the chapters and the PNM's, and make the whole thing go. They have always been here, and will continue to be here, long after you are gone. It takes a special person to be an Aunt Gin.
