old row vs new row

by: confused

I dont understand the difference between old and new row. If adpi was first here wouldnt they be old row? Do you rank old row and new row separately? Like, whats good for new row is average for old row? Or whats average for old row is bottom compared to new row? If someone could pls explain, thatd be great....

Old Row versus New Row - why distinguish between the two and why is this important? The way I see it is Old Row was established on campus first, thus the need to say, “I was here first and you will follow my lead”. The thing about Old Row is there are lifelong traditions that will never be broken as there are many people who have lived the life of Old Row, and Old Row alumni will continue to support their house and traditions. They will recruit those that will fit this bill of tradition. This is a university in the State of Alabama so, of course, Alabama students are important to this tradition versus someone who has no relationship to this university whatsoever.

Old Row wants to be perceived as a “status symbol” and this is important to Old Row. Old Row usually comes from old money and the life of status. They have the need to keep up with the Joneses. To be anything other than Old Row is a disgrace. So with that mentality, Old Row is inept to put New Row beneath them.

Just look at how many sororities have been on campus for years and years and they are still considered New Row? What’s up with that? Will they ever be considered “Old Row”? No, not as long as Old Row has anything to do with it. Then you have the newer sororities that have only been on campus a few years and they are considered “bottom tier” or completely worthless. Will they every move up in the ranks? No, not as long as Old Row has anything to do with it. It is simply holding on to and valuing tradition.

To some, it's about finding the best car....to others it's about tradition.

At Alabama, fraternities and sororities are like that as well.

To each is own!

I guess I could understand tradition IF THE OLD ROW SORORITIES WERE THE OLDEST. But they're not. How is that even logical?! So you can TRY and say it's about tradition, but obviously it's not. It's about beer. Lol.

And looking at these oos students from NYC, Boston, DC - yeah, they got some change and I hate to break it to ya, their money is a hell of a lot older than ours.

So what do we have? We have a bunch of girls selling a bag of goods that isn't even real. And who is buying it? Only our fellow Alabama girls. We are doing a disservice to ourselves and we're too stupid to realize it.

Do you hear that sound? It's the rest of the world laughing at us as they take control of "our" campus.

The truth is new row Alabama people aren't that wealthy, much more money coming in from oos students. Not that money defines worth at all.

The wealthy Alabama people send their kids to Virginia, Vandy and the northeast for college.

That is complete bull. New row has plenty of wealthy individuals, especially if they are from out of state considering how expensive tuition is, they can afford it

Got a point there. Could Alabamans afford the approx 60k(tutition, dues, housing, travel, etc.) it cost parents to send their oos kids there. Of course im talking oos kids that do not have scholarships. And if old row is important to those that have deep connections to it and holds value to them, thats fine, but they need to change their argument a bit and try not to define it by insulting others.

my two cents

But, you also forget that a lot of the wealthy OOS kids that come here that do their research only want old row or come here wanting old row,. The old row sororities actively recruit these zip codes, too. Most don't get cut all., If they are really wealthy and want old row they get it!

Most oos come to Alabama on academic scholorships so your not getting much in oos money. Poor folks can get their smart kids in Bama then just pay for Greek dues and expenses.

The OOS girls on scholarships run the socioeconomic range. It's naive to think that they are either all "poor" or all "rich".

Houses seem to find girls similar to them.

So the well dressed out of state girls with country club backgrounds get recruited by houses full of similar girls.

And yes, The old row is going to find and recruit these types of OOS and there are also new row choices for girls of similar backgrounds. Beleive the typical OOS goes through rush without a deep appreciation of the distinction (old or new) of any particular house.

But there are also houses for scholarship (and other) girls from OOS without these backgrounds. Perhaps , their tuition savings helps offset some of the expense.

I think honestly the old/new row stuff is very counter productive and is not a "tradition" anyway. The tradition is a strong and deep Greek system that is an integral part of campus life and contributes a set of experiences that many students find rewarding.
