houses

by: Elyse

For the lurking moms on this site:
If you are not from the the deep south, welcome! However, here are some things to know about UA. The south in general is conservative, which I'm sure you knew when you sent your daughter down here. That means that a generally accepted look is more conservative than what your community may do. This is OK! We don't want to change your girls. What it will mean, however, is a little bit of a raised eyebrow, and if that matters to you, it's because we tend to show less skin, tan less, etc... Women from the deep south that dress like that are considered more loose, so that is the impression it gives moms, daughters, and the hormone raged boys on campus. Again, it is OK, and it isn't judging you as much as it is a regional upbringing. If we sent our daughters to the east coast (New Jersey, for example) I'm SURE you all would think our girls were plain and needed some flair. Our girls might get dropped by your traditional top houses for it.
What I'm trying to say is that maybe instead of fighting over who is "top" and who is not, we set a new standard. Maybe Alpha Phi and Zeta are top for Jersey girls. Maybe Kappa and Phi Mu are top for Texas girls. Maybe Chi O and Alpha Chi are top for Alabama.
Why don't we start classifying the houses as they fit their groups? With this many women, one size can no longer fit all. Agree?

12.
The school is recruiting very talented and attractive girls from out of state, that during rush are going to evaluate houses on things other than the reputation of the girls from their high school and community that are members

As a result, new row and what some rate as "lower" houses here, end up being full of talented, smart, beautiful and fun girls.

Think it is great for the overall vibrancy and quality of all the houses.

There will be wonderful houses for the Alabama girls to find their friends and peers as well as wonderful places for the out of state girls to find community and sisterhood.

Both are important.

Hope y'all can get along.

I agree with you, but as long as people insist on arguing about what makes a house best, or what the definition of pretty is, it's not happening.

it sounds like the in-state girls want to carve out their own little groups and isolate themselves. not going to happen. it is good for the university and for everyone involved that there be diversity within each house. if I were from Alabama I would embrace being sisters with a girl from Colorado, New Jersey, and Ohio. This is a good thing. Open your mind. Also, based on what I see the Alabama girls wearing, I think the assumption in the OP that Alabama girls are more prim and proper (and less "tanned") is not accurate.

Claws back in Caro. First, Connecticut is not the east coast. You are your own preppy little country and more like the south than New York or Jersey. You missed the whole meaning of the OP. She was trying to say that each group has its niche and one isn't better than the other.

I actually do agree with Caro here. It was totally the OP that said "Women from the deep south that dress like that are considered more loose" and you can check that quote yourself. The OP was certainly the person that was being all judgy. OP is calling girls who dress a certain way loose. I wouldn't really say that's saying "one isn't better than the other."

Also, of course CT counts as the East Coast! What, does New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Massachusetts, and Washington DC not count as East Coast either? #6, you're just giving the rest of us Southerners a bad name. There are many, MANY preppy areas of NY and NJ. Your terrible ignorance certainly is alarming.

Can we not all just get along? Recruitment is over, we are not in competition for pnms anymore. As an oos active who is in a more southern sorority, I would say there is more negativity from in state students and parents to us oos than when I started3 years ago. I think the instate people need to be more accepting and realize that oos students bring greater diversity to campus. Also more tuition money and frankly, we've raised the rankings of the university dramatically. You should be complimented that so many of us recognize how awesome UA is as a university.

The funny thing is the only people that really care are the ones that battle it out on this sites. You don't see girls coming after one another for being from different places. Moms- this is not a site you. Stop trying to live your daughter's life. It's just sad if you are out of college and on this site

I think the Alabama natives are starting to care. Kind of get it because the university is now majority oos.

OP comments reeks of the 'bless your heart' thats sprinkled with a little niceness.
