is alpha gam impossible to get a bid from without a rec?

You need a rec, and you need to already know a bunch of them and be close friends. If you don't already know a bunch, I wouldn't worry about a rec.
They're one of the handful that already have their pledge class picked out.

What if you don't know any current members, but you get a rev from a VERY VERY influential, well known, involved alum? Will that make a difference?

A rec is just a rec, it can really help but if the girls don't think you are a good fit, your rec can only help you out so much .

I'm OOS but from the South and I went to Pref night with them (chose someone else) and didn't know anyone personally. However, I went to a well-known school in my hometown, got academic awards, lots of extracurriculars, my rec writers knew my parents and what they did for a living, and they knew the name of my summer camp. Plus, I do think that I communicated well with the actives that I spoke to.

So not impossible to get a bid if you match what they're looking for.
