enjoy while you can

by: Alum with regrets

A few years from now, when you are out on the job market or applying for law/med/professional school, your Greek affiliation will work against you. The stereotype of the stupid, frivolous sister/ frat boy is hard to work against so you'll end up dropping it from your resume. You will wonder why you invested so much time in your sorority/fraternity. ( If you think Greek life won't affect your grades, You're delusional. ) Sorry to be a downer but I now have serious regrets about the whole thing.

Enjoy Greek life while you can and stay safe.

Being Greek can be a great thing on resumes - make it work for you. Don't JUST be a member, have a position. Don't JUST join a house, participate in other clubs, teams, or activities. At least for the girls, Greek life will only affect your grades if you let it, so just make sure you keep a balance and remember why you're at Cornell in the first place! To all new members, have an amazing 3.5 years in the Greek community!

I'm sorry it didn't work out for you, but to be blunt, I'm a senior with a job. The majority of my PC has jobs or grad school already lined up. All of the girls who graduated from my house last year either got great jobs or grad school (many Ivy League). Greek life doesn't define or determine a person's ability for achievement - as I said, as long as you learn something from the experience and can talk to it in interviews you're good. Being Greek only helped me.

The only way Greek life will hurt you is if you make it about the wrong things. Living with great people, being involved with philanthropies, and still caring about other aspects of life will not hurt you. However, joining a house where you can't be yourself, feel pressure to go out every night and never make real connections probably can. Nobody should be going on an interview leading with what sorority or frat thy were in--that's lame!

It DID work out for me once I dropped any reference to Greek life from my cv. Again, read the comments on this Greek Rank webpage and you'll understand why job interviewers and grad programs smirk when they see sororities listed on resumes. The fact that you have to "speak to it" in interviews (justify your participation? geez)) underscores what I'm talking about.

You're claiming you have it all figured out now that you've graduated and dropped references to your organization on your resume, yet you're trolling greek rank in the middle of a work day; something seems off. Either you're not actually an alum and are just trying to make yourself feel better about not getting into the organization you wanted as a current student, or you are an alum and are incorrectly blaming your mediocre job that allots you enough free time for this BS website on your prior affiliation.

Fraternities definitely help people get jobs after school by expanding your network and giving you contact with alumni

Also, in the professional world people don't only care about work, they want to hire people they will enjoy being around. Greek life participation can distinguish an applicant as more socially adept

That "networking" trope is a myth promoted by the frats. Your frat might get you into a country club but not a Fortune 500. But, hey, your frat will host great parties when you come back for alumni weekend and relive the glory days.

Clearly you don't know how networking works. Especially at a school like Cornell where there are tons of successful alums, being Greek is a great way to make connections. All of my internships were secured or at least helped by the alumni I reached out to at great companies.

the person who wrote this is clearly trolling. It's pathetic and misleading.

well I got my junior year internship through a fraternity alumni connection, and it led to my full time offer. I don't know where you're getting this stuff from but its wrong haha

plus they stereotype of stupid frivolous frat boy or sorority sister doesn't hold up when you're coming from cornell or other top schools. it just shows you are smart AND social

by: Well...

Let's get it straight. If you're a vapid loser who thinks your frat or sorority makes you who you are, then that's going to come across in an interview. Sorry to tell some of you, but that whole "tier" thing, doesn't matter later. What matters is you growing, making great friends and becoming confident. An insecure person who only cares about shallow things will do poorly wether they have a frat or sorority in their resume or not. Can't blame Greek life

It's the Cornell pedigree that will open doors...unless you are mediocre. When you are working 60-80 hour weeks in Silicon Valley, Wall Street, etc no one needs you to be "social". You'll be working like a dog.

they do need, or want, you to be social. trust me, they want people who seem natural and cool to be around. speaking about banks by the way, I don't know much about tech

I'm am also an alum with a job and I've been in interviews that straight up said the skills I learned in Greek life were one of the reasons reasons they offered the position to me. Sorry you don't have anything else going for you as well.

Love the Greeks, glad I rushed, and having fun but I am not deluding myself that it will help on the job market. Apart from a cruise line, what employer would value a leadership role in a sorority or frat? Thank "Legally Blonde" for perceptions.

bashing cruise lines is kind of a weird tactic considering we've got the best hotel school in the country, and cruise lines absolutely are a fine place to work for a hotelier...

Uh... any job that has you deal with people.

To the person who bashed the cruise line job...is that a dig to hotel students? That major is one of the most competitive to get into this school, and fairly well paid once out of school. Now you're just being silly. Plenty of jobs value leadership in Greek life, on the sports field, etc. you have misinformation. Additionally, one of the hardest parts of finding a position is knowing about openings...connections through brothers and sisters are a great way to find out about those openings.
