Are tiers real?

What's the deal with all these tiers and do they mean anything? I'm a guy who's planning on rushing in a couple weeks. Can someone please explain the whole tier situation?

Eh kind of but it’s really not that deep. Some of these guys just like thinking about tiers cuz it helps them get hard at night when they wanna wack it
