Cornell worth it?

by: michael

I recently got off the waitlist for UVirginia which is my state school. UVa had been my dream and it’s prestige is up there with varied schools like Cornell, Dartmouth, UCLA and Georgetown. I already committed to Cornell but I haven’t really been able to find any reason why anyone would choose their strong state school over Cornell. At this point, Cornell CAS is not earning me any major respect with my peers nor am I honestly sure if the social scene in a rural NY town is going to be good. Anyone else choose Cornell over their state school have a convincing reason? I know Cornell is Ivy League but that label has less and less meaning nowadays. Most people only consider HYPSM and often Penn, Columbia and Duke as the real gold standard elite schools while everything else in top 25 are just lumped together.

If I'm gonna be honest, go UVA. The kids at Cornell love it here and have massive school pride, so you'll socially struggle if you're even the slightest bit unsure or apprehensive. We genuinely don't take too kindly to people who don't love Cornell as much as we do. Not trying to be rude, just provide an honest opinion on the intersection of school pride and social life.

UVA . price difference is greater than alumni outcome difference

Omg guys I know that Cornell is objectively better than UVa, but I’m deciding whether benefits will really outweigh the costs. The benefits are too similar and the anecdotal experiences are too similar.

You’re a moron if you think this is even worth debating. Obviously Cornell is the better choice. In no scenario outside of a complete full ride and honors program is UVA a smart decision.

Best of luck with your decision. Tbh you had two excellent options. The people who say there is no debate are lacking in objectivity. Cornell and UVA have roughly the same number of undergrads - Cornell is big for an Ivy and UVA is small for a state flagship. Both have strong academics and vibrant social scenes. Cornell is an Ivy and slightly higher ranked than UVA, but UVA has better weather, a prettier campus, better sports, and quite frankly, friendlier people. In state UVA v. full pay Cornell, the scale tips to UVA. OOS UVA is a closer call. At that point you have to prioritize what is important to you including fit, vibe, and importance of status.
