Cornell worth it?

by: michael

I recently got off the waitlist for UVirginia which is my state school. UVa had been my dream and it’s prestige is up there with varied schools like Cornell, Dartmouth, UCLA and Georgetown. I already committed to Cornell but I haven’t really been able to find any reason why anyone would choose their strong state school over Cornell. At this point, Cornell CAS is not earning me any major respect with my peers nor am I honestly sure if the social scene in a rural NY town is going to be good. Anyone else choose Cornell over their state school have a convincing reason? I know Cornell is Ivy League but that label has less and less meaning nowadays. Most people only consider HYPSM and often Penn, Columbia and Duke as the real gold standard elite schools while everything else in top 25 are just lumped together.

Pick Virginia if it’s full ride or similar tbh

It’s not rural at all. There’s a 100,000 people in the metro. Rural would be going to any of the liberal arts schools in Mass and Maine.

I hate when people say “Cornell’s in the middle of nowhere.” Sure Ithaca is in upstate NY, but it’s not like Cornell is just in the middle of the woods. Collegetown alone is like a little city.

Cornell is definitely the better school. Ivy > good state school. UVA has good name rep, but not like Cornell.

i know 100% that cornell is better than uva but everyone im speaking says its not good enough to justify choosing over virginia... tbh if i had to choose between a normal state school and cornell i would obv choose cornell, which is actually what i did with virginia tech, but once i got into uva couple days back things changed

Bruh who are you taking to? If you talk to recruiters you’ll learn that Cornell absolutely has a leg up on big firms compared to UVA, UMich, at the Cals.

You’re living in fantasy land if you think UVA carries the same weight as Cornell.

@Lol you're so pretentious you don't see the reality of the situation... Cornell isn't HYP, it isnt MIT or UPenn or UChicago... it's a great school but barely any better than Virginia

Cornell’s acceptance rate is 1/3 that of UVA’s. UVA is on the level of BC, NYU, and UMich, whereas Cornell is competing with Northwestern, Brown, and Dartmouth. Nothing wrong with UVA, but don’t kid yourself that they’re on the same level b/c recruiters won’t view it that way either.

In what way does Ivy League credential mean less nowadays? Just look at the acceptance rates this year, if anything they’re even more valuable than normal

acceptance rates are def lower every year in Ivies but its also lower for top public schools ... since acceptance rates are not uniquely lower for cornell/ivies, its not adding to the relative value... also as i said, some of the ivies like harvard, yale, princeton, penn, columbia (big 5) still have enormous added value that no top state school can compete with but schools like cornell are more and more comparable to schools like uva since top state schools have really gotten better and established prestige in the last 40 years

besides i got rejected from a top state school like ucla and waitlisted at uva but accepted into cornell so its not like theres a remarkable difference in their admissions strategy.... with the other ivies, i got straight rejections

The diversification of student bodies is diluting the advantage of Ivy League credentials. Families who in the past would have had a lock on an Ivy League education are displaced and take their students and connections to other non-Ivy schools. The network is becoming broader, which is a fact, and elite public schools are closing the gap.

i chose cornell over rutgers but if its uva, i'd go with uva... very little difference between the cornell and uva except if you want to go into tech or physics or something

im from virginia born and raised, chose cornell over uva because i wanted to "see the world". honestly, uva attracts and accepts intellectually similar calibre of students as cornell. i would put cornell in the same tier as uva for a lot of fields including finance, gov and econ but obviously not in stem. cornell however gives you a way more global perspective and you interact not just with east coasters but people from all over the world-- that is simply not true for uva. So, if you don't care about getting a "globalized view" or comfortable being in the southern, protestant culture of virginia, then go with virginia.

I go to Cornell and have a sibling who goes to UVA for full tuition (OOS) at both. We studied the same thing. Gonna be frank here, I don't know where you are rationalizing that there is not a prestige drop off from Cornell to UVA. Don't get me wrong, UVA is a great university, but Cornell is still an ivy league institution. Cornell Hotelies and ILRies place just as good as UVA does in my opinion based off what my sibling tells me about finance stuff there.

Personally think you want to go to UVA for the fit/vibe but want to rationalize it by saying that UVA is just as good as Cornell. Disagree about with above comment about targets. Think UVA slots in in the third level.

I dont get why the only thing Cornell students can say that distinguishes them from a good public school is that it is Ivy League... UVa was founded earlier than Cornell so it has more history ... I actually did want to go to Cornell once I was accepted but when I visited and did more research into the school, I've realized it doesn't offer an "Ivy League" experience like the other Ivies and for the most part is very similar prestige wise to UVa (this isn't just me saying it, plenty of successful older people agree)

given you already made your decision to switch to UVA, no point in hashing this over. But I think based off your replies you are very much trying to rationalize the prestige factor. The fact that Cornell is Ivy League is not about the experience factor does not really make sense. Plenty of old ivy league prep at Cornell not to mention Cornell was founded to be a different kind of university by Ezra so it does not retain a lot of the preppiness that you would see at HYP. The ivy league is not just a name, it is basically a club where members relate to each other. Can't tell you how many times it has been an easy way for me to talk to alums of different ivies. It is a confederation that will unfortunately never die.

As I said earlier, you very much seem gung ho on the vibes of UVA vs Cornell and throughout all your responses tried to rationalize your decision by talking about how UVA and Cornell were not that different in prestige. There is a difference between job placement and prestige. Lastly, you also brought up how you got into Cornell but not into UCLA and UVA by waitlist. That is not an uncommon experience lol. I got into Cornell, Vandy, Gtown etc. but not into my state schools, Northeastern, other typical safety schools. One of my best buddies is from Cal and got into Harvard and UCBerk but not into UCLA. This happens with college admissions all the time and is not indicative of the school itself. Regardless best of luck at UVA. You made the right decision if you wanted a school u fit at better, but a terrible decision if you thought UVA was more prestigious.
