Facts about greeklife

by: Fall 20

Theres a lot of stuff tossed around on here, but for anyone who's curious/new at cornell/bored here's some defining qualities of and advice towards cornell greeklife:
- Sororities are all fake, personality wise. Some are just less fake than others
- There is a frat for every kind of guy, but if you dont fit the "like to party" vibe you'll have a much lighter social schedule altogether
- Frat parties are better than bars if you're a frosh- no fakes needed and cornell frats dont do cover charges like some other schools
- Parties twice or more a week every week gets old pretty quick after your first year
- DKPsi are worthless. Avoid at all costs.
- Joining a problematic frat/srat (DKPsi, APhi, Sig Pi etc) means you need to be prepared to accept whatever baggage they're carrying- just like you reflect on your org, your org (and whatever it's done in recent memory) reflects on you
- Dont join a house just because it's a popular one or it's known as a top house on GR, you'll put yourself through unnecessary stress trying to fit in if your personality doesnt fit with them. You'll be spending a lot of time with the people in your member class/org, so decide if you really feel like you fit with them
- A lot of frats have similar sounding names. Don't get confused at the door for a party as to what house you're at, take a sec to make sure
- Dint show up to parties in a group of 15+ people
- Drinking/smoking doesnt make you cooler than anyone, and dont feel pressured to start once your in college. That said if you want to partake then go ahead.
- Cheerleader effect in srats is a very real thing. You'll see
- Ranks on here mean next to nothing except to the orgs in the "middle tiers" who want to social climb. Cornell's full of insecure kids, looking for social validation, don't fall into that trap
- Most frats only let you into parties after o-week if you know a brother, and they know you. Get to know people.
- Idk how rush will look in the fall/spring but don't set sight on one house, even if you feel like ur guaranteed to make it in. Shop around and see if one is a better fit
- DKPsi still sucks. This is an indisputable fact.
- I was kidding at the top, these are all opinions. Everyone's got their own outlook on greeklife, figure out what yours is when you get here

agree with almost everything that was written up there(there are many fake girls but also a lot of genuinely nice and fun girls) If you are a frosh (you probably wont care but), but i think it’s worth reading.

Literally nothing except quantity of mixers with better seats. Quality of brotherhood, house, parties etc varies wildly between houses

Rising senior here and I cannot agree more with what you said about parties after your freshman year. Parties are fun as a freshman right after you join and your first semester living in the house as a sophomore but after that they get old. Every once in a while you have a fun theme or a four or six way thats different but regular 1 on 1s are all the same. Not saying you shouldn't think about parties/ social life when rushing but if you join a house for the parties then you're gonna hate it by the time you're done with sophomore year

Space out your partying/social schedule a bit for yourself. If you're out at bars/fishbowls during the week and going hard in your room on a thursday you'll likely be burnt out for the weekend parties. Also don't leave studying/hw for the weekend, sunday afternoon you'll likely want to relax and recover from Fri/Sat, and leave hw for the last minute.
