University of South Carolina Columbia - USC Overview

  About Greek Life at USC

Columbia is a college football town, and if you've seen what a Gamecock Saturday looks like, you already know this campus takes its social life seriously. The Greek system at USC fits right into that culture — it's a big, active community that plays a real role in how a lot of students spend their four years here.

The system is organized across several councils. The Interfraternity Council (IFC) and Panhellenic Council cover the traditional fraternities and sororities, and both run sizable rosters of chapters. The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) represents the Divine Nine organizations on campus, including chapters like Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Delta Sigma Theta, Omega Psi Phi, and others. There's also a Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) presence, with organizations like Phi Iota Alpha, Sigma Lambda Beta, and Kappa Delta Chi rounding out the full picture.

IFC and Panhellenic recruitment both happen in the fall. Panhellenic formal recruitment is the structured, multi-round process you've probably heard about — it runs over several days and involves preference rounds, ranking, and a bid day. IFC rush is a little more informal but still competitive depending on the chapter. NPHC and MGC organizations intake on their own timelines, which are separate from fall rush entirely.

Housing is part of the equation here. A number of IFC fraternities have houses, either on or near Greek Village, and some Panhellenic chapters do as well. The Greek Village area gives the system a physical presence on campus that makes it feel pretty central to student life, not just a background thing.

Philanthropy events are a regular part of the calendar — Greek Week, chapter-specific fundraisers, and community service projects happen throughout the year. Chapters also tend to be involved in broader campus life through student government, club sports, and other organizations, so the overlap between Greek members and other parts of campus isn't hard to find.

USC is a large public university with a student body in the tens of thousands, and the Greek system scales with that. It's not a school where everyone goes Greek, but it's also not a fringe thing — it's genuinely woven into the social fabric here, especially during football season.
