University of St. Thomas - UST Overview

  About Greek Life at UST

St. Thomas is a small, private Catholic university in St. Paul, Minnesota, with an undergraduate enrollment that keeps most aspects of campus life pretty close-knit. That extends to the Greek community here, which is on the smaller side compared to big state schools or universities where Greek life dominates the social calendar.

The only active fraternity currently operating on campus is Sigma Chi, which falls under the Interfraternity Council (IFC) umbrella. There's no active Panhellenic chapter at the moment, so the system is pretty minimal compared to what you'd find at a larger Midwestern school like Minnesota or Wisconsin. That said, at a school this size, a single chapter can still have a real presence on campus.

St. Thomas has a strong Catholic identity and a campus culture that tends to center around academics, service, and athletics. The school competes at the Division I level after a recent move up from Division III, and sports are a growing part of campus identity. Greek life exists here, but it's more of a niche corner of the social scene rather than something that defines how most students spend their weekends.

Rush at a school like this is going to feel a lot more personal than the massive recruitment weeks you'd see at SEC or Big Ten schools. Fewer chapters means fewer events, smaller groups, and generally a more informal process. Chapter housing on campus isn't the defining feature of the Greek experience at St. Thomas the way it might be elsewhere.

Philanthropy and community service tend to be emphasized in Greek chapters at Catholic institutions, and that generally holds true here as well. Sigma Chi has national philanthropy commitments, including their Derby Days fundraiser, which supports childhood cancer research.
