Tbh that's not true at all. The dues for fraternities and sororities at A&M are higher than they are in probably 80% of the nation. The only schools in Texas with higher dues are UT and SMU. Yeah, dues here are less than the select few schools that are explicitly known for their lavish Greek life but they're still pretty expensive by most standards.

Like you said, the only schools in Texas with higher dues are UT/SMU. Ours are higher than party schools like Tech and even private schools like TCU and Baylor, but the only other SEC schools I can think of that we have higher dues than are maybe Kentucky and Tennessee.

To put things in perspective, A&M fraternity and sorority dues are about equal wth the following: Arkansas, LSU, OU, Oklahoma State, Florida, Florida State, Auburn, Vanderbilt, and Georgia. All in all, most Southern schools with established Greek life.

We're still way cheaper than Alabama, Ole Miss, Mizzou, or Mississippi State but let's be honest, those degrees are 100% worthless no matter how much you pay in dues

Last i checked frat dues were between 1k and 2k per semester , but I'm not sure about sorority dues.

They're only that much if you live in the frat house. Just based off dues:

A&M: $1,000-2,000 a semester

And then just some randomly selected schools from the list above and around Texas:
Texas State: $700 - $1,200
UH: $500 - $1,000
UNT: $1,000 - $1,500
Tech: $500 - $1,000
Baylor: $700 - $1,000
TCU: $500 - $1,000
LSU: $1,000 - $2,000
OU: $500 - $2,000
Florida State: $600 - $1,500
University of Florida: $800 - $1,800
Auburn: $1,000 - $2,000
Vanderbilt: $800-1400
Georgia: $1,000 - $1,500

There's some schools (UT, Alabama, etc.) that pay ridiculous amounts in dues. But Texas A&M is by no means cheap. It's actually pretty expensive compared to most schools, both in the state and in the country. So no, A&M Greek life is not even close to being "about as cheap as it gets in Texas and probably in the whole SEC Greek life." It's not the most expensive, but it's definitely in the top quartile

A large part of the dues goes to maintaining the house. If you notice, Baylor and TCU don't exactly have houses (even though plans are in place to build some kind of village). The Greek systems above people have mentioned that have the most expensive dues also have the largest and newest houses.

I can't speak about fraternities, but sorority life at A&M is pretty cheap if you take into consideration the houses and social events. If you live in-house, that's cheaper than many private apartments in CStat as well. But OP is trying to hide that from her parents, so that obviously wouldn't work.
