University of Massachusetts Boston - UMB Overview

  About Greek Life at UMB

UMass Boston is a commuter-heavy public university sitting right on the harbor in Dorchester, and that context shapes just about everything on campus — including how Greek life fits into the picture. The school draws a lot of nontraditional students, working students, and Boston-area locals who go home after class, so the social infrastructure here looks pretty different from a traditional residential campus.

The Greek system at UMB is on the smaller side. The organizations currently active on campus include Kappa Sigma on the fraternity side, along with two historically Black fraternities and sororities — Iota Phi Theta and Sigma Gamma Rho — which fall under the NPHC umbrella. NPHC chapters operate differently from IFC or Panhellenic orgs. Their intake process is more structured and selective, typically happens after members are already established students, and tends to emphasize community service and lifelong membership over the semester-long rush cycle you'd see elsewhere.

Don't expect a Greek Row or chapter houses here. UMass Boston doesn't have that kind of residential setup, so chapters aren't anchored to a physical house the way they might be at a big state school out in the suburbs. Brotherhood and sisterhood events, community service, and step shows tend to be where you'll see these organizations most visible on campus.

Greek life isn't the dominant social force at UMB the way it might be at a flagship residential university. It's more of a close-knit, intentional community for the students who are involved. If you want to go Greek here, you're generally doing it because you genuinely want to be part of that organization's mission — not because it's the default path to a social life on campus.
