Rutgers University Newark - RUN Overview

  About Greek Life at RUN

Rutgers University Newark sits in the middle of one of the most densely populated urban areas in the country, and that setting shapes pretty much everything about campus life here — including the Greek system. RUN is a commuter-heavy school, which means the social scene works differently than it does at a traditional residential campus. Greek life exists here, but it fits into that commuter culture rather than dominating it.

The system is on the smaller side, with an equal number of fraternities and sororities active on campus. What stands out is the makeup of the organizations themselves. You won't find a traditional IFC or Panhellenic structure driving things here the way you might at a Big Ten flagship. Instead, the Greek community at RUN is built largely around Multicultural Greek Council and National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations. Groups like Kappa Alpha Psi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, and Phi Beta Sigma represent the NPHC side, while Lambda Sigma Upsilon, Lambda Theta Phi, Phi Iota Alpha, Lambda Theta Alpha, and others carry the MGC presence. Tau Kappa Epsilon rounds out the fraternity side as one of the few traditionally IFC-affiliated chapters on campus.

Because of the commuter nature of the school, don't expect a Greek Row or chapter houses lined up near campus. Most chapters operate without dedicated housing, which means their presence is felt more through events, community service, and visibility on campus than through residential life. Intake and recruitment processes tend to be lower-key compared to what you'd see at a larger state school with a big Greek tradition.

Philanthropy and community engagement are central to how most of these chapters present themselves, which tracks with the broader mission of schools like RUN that emphasize civic engagement and serving urban communities. The NPHC organizations in particular have long-standing traditions around step shows, probate ceremonies, and public service that give Greek life here a distinct character tied to those national fraternities and sororities' histories.

Overall, this is a more intimate Greek community embedded in an urban commuter school — it's not the centerpiece of campus social life, but for students who do go Greek here, the organizations tend to carry real meaning and a strong sense of brotherhood or sisterhood rooted in shared cultural identity and service.
