Philadelphia University - PU Overview

  About Greek Life at PU

Philadelphia University — now merged with Thomas Jefferson University — is a smaller, specialized school that historically focused on design, engineering, fashion, and health sciences. The Greek community there reflects the intimate scale of the campus: you're looking at two fraternities and two sororities, which keeps things pretty close-knit compared to what you'd find at a large state school.

On the fraternity side, Alpha Chi Rho and Sigma Nu represent IFC. For sororities, Delta Phi Epsilon and Theta Phi Alpha make up the Panhellenic side of things. There's no NPHC or MGC presence listed, so the system is essentially built around those four chapters. With a school this size, that's a relatively proportional setup — it's a smaller Greek community, but it's there and it's active.

Because the university has always leaned toward professional and studio-based programs, the campus culture has traditionally been more focused on academic work and career development than on the kind of Greek-heavy social scene you'd expect at a flagship state school. That doesn't mean Greek life is invisible — it just tends to be a more niche part of the overall student experience rather than the centerpiece of it.

Recruitment is generally more relaxed at schools this size. Chapters typically don't run the massive, multi-day formal rush processes you see at bigger universities. It's more personal, which can actually make it easier to get a real sense of the people involved before you commit to anything.

Chapter housing isn't a major feature of this system — PU isn't a campus built around a Greek row, so chapters tend to operate through on-campus spaces rather than dedicated houses. Philanthropy events and campus involvement are usually how these chapters stay visible throughout the year.
