Northwest University - NWU Overview

  About Greek Life at NWU

Northwest University is a smaller private Christian university located in Kirkland, Washington, just outside of Seattle, and its Greek system reflects that intimate campus environment. With a solid collection of fraternities and sororities spread across multiple governing councils, the system offers more options than you might expect for a school of its size.

The fraternity side is governed by the Interfraternity Council, which oversees the more traditional IFC chapters like Sigma Chi, Pi Kappa Alpha, Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and others. Panhellenic covers the women's organizations, including well-known nationals like Chi Omega, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Alpha Phi, and Pi Beta Phi, among several others. What makes NWU's system stand out is the presence of both NPHC chapters — Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Omega Psi Phi — and Multicultural Greek Council organizations like Omega Delta Phi, Lambda Theta Alpha, Sigma Lambda Beta, Kappa Phi Lambda, and Pi Alpha Phi. That's a genuinely broad cross-section of Greek life for a campus this size.

Because NWU is a smaller school, Greek life here tends to be more community-focused than party-driven. Chapters are generally close-knit, and membership means you're going to know pretty much everyone in your organization well. Recruitment happens in the fall, with IFC typically running informal rush and Panhellenic following a more structured process with events spread over several days.

Chapter housing isn't the dominant feature of Greek life here the way it might be at a large state school — most socializing happens through chapter events, philanthropy weeks, and campus programming rather than a traditional Greek Row. Philanthropy is a consistent part of the culture across most chapters, which fits with the university's broader values as a faith-based institution.
