New Jersey City University - NJCU Overview

  About Greek Life at NJCU

NJCU is a smaller public university sitting right across the Hudson from Manhattan in Jersey City, and its Greek community reflects that tight-knit, urban commuter school character. There aren't dozens of chapters here — the system is made up of a handful of fraternities and sororities — but the organizations that are active tend to have a real presence on campus.

The council structure leans heavily toward multicultural and historically Black organizations. You'll find chapters affiliated with the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), like Iota Phi Theta and Kappa Alpha Psi, alongside multicultural fraternities and sororities such as Lambda Sigma Upsilon, Lambda Theta Phi, Lambda Theta Alpha, Lambda Tau Omega, and Omega Phi Chi. Tau Kappa Epsilon rounds things out as a more traditional IFC-style fraternity. That mix tells you something about the student body at NJCU, which is one of the more diverse public universities in New Jersey.

Because NJCU is primarily a commuter school, Greek life works a little differently than it does at a big residential campus. There aren't chapter houses, and the Greek system isn't the center of weekend social life the way it might be at a large state school. Recruitment and intake processes tend to be more personal and less structured around formal rush weeks — especially for NPHC and multicultural organizations, which typically run their own intake processes on their own timelines.

Philanthropy and community service are a big part of how these chapters show up on campus. Step shows and cultural events organized by NPHC and multicultural chapters tend to be some of the more visible moments for Greek life at NJCU throughout the academic year. It's a smaller system, but the organizations here tend to be deeply connected to the broader identity of the school.
