University of Maryland Eastern Shore - UMDES Overview

  About Greek Life at UMDES

University of Maryland Eastern Shore is a historically Black university sitting on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and that context shapes pretty much everything about how Greek life works here. The organizations on campus are all part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council tradition — the Divine Nine — which makes sense given the school's HBCU identity and culture.

The Greek community here is smaller and more intimate than what you'd find at a large flagship state university. There are a handful of NPHC fraternities represented, including Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma, along with Alpha Kappa Alpha on the sorority side and Alpha Nu Omega rounding things out. These organizations are the backbone of the Greek presence on campus.

Intake at NPHC chapters works differently than the open recruitment you might picture at a big IFC or Panhellenic school. It's a more selective, process-oriented path, and chapters typically look for members who are academically solid and genuinely committed to the organization's values and service mission. There's no big rush week with tables on the quad — it's more relationship-based.

At an HBCU like UMES, Greek-lettered organizations tend to carry real cultural weight. Step shows are a significant part of that. Chapters regularly participate in stepping and strolling events, and those performances are a big deal on campus — they're one of the more visible ways organizations distinguish themselves and build their presence in the community. Philanthropy and community service are also central to how these chapters operate, not just something they tack on for appearances.

Don't expect Greek Row with chapter houses lining a street off campus. NPHC chapters at most schools this size don't operate out of dedicated houses, and UMES is no different. The organizations are active through campus programming, community involvement, and events rather than through a residential footprint.
