Long Island University Brooklyn - LIUB Overview

  About Greek Life at LIUB

LIU Brooklyn is a mid-size private university sitting right in the heart of Brooklyn, and its Greek system reflects the kind of tight-knit community you'd expect from a commuter-heavy urban campus. The chapters here are part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, better known as the NPHC, which is the governing body for the historically Black Greek-letter organizations — the Divine Nine — that have a presence on campus.

The organizations active at LIU Brooklyn include Alpha Phi Alpha and Kappa Alpha Psi on the fraternity side, with Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta representing the sororities. That's a solid NPHC lineup, and these orgs have deep roots nationally, even if the local chapters operate on a smaller scale. There's no IFC or Panhellenic presence here, so if you're coming in expecting a traditional rush week with tabling and open houses, that's not really how things work at this school.

NPHC recruitment is a different process altogether. It's typically called intake rather than rush, and it's more selective, more structured, and often happens on a semester-by-semester basis depending on each chapter's interest and alumni involvement. It's not the kind of thing where you show up to a few events and get a bid — there's a lot more to it than that, and timelines can vary significantly.

Because LIU Brooklyn draws a lot of commuter students and sits in one of the most activity-dense cities in the world, Greek life here is more of a focused community than a campus-wide social centerpiece. Students have the entire borough — and the rest of New York City — competing for their time and attention. That said, NPHC chapters tend to be deeply involved in community service, philanthropy, and cultural programming, so when these orgs are active on campus, you'll notice it.

Don't expect chapter houses. Like most urban schools in New York, there's no Greek Row here. Chapters operate out of campus spaces and coordinate off-campus as needed, which is pretty standard for this type of city school.
