Livingstone College - LC Overview

  About Greek Life at LC

Livingstone College is a small HBCU in Salisbury, North Carolina, and like most schools in that tradition, its social and organizational culture runs through the Divine Nine. You won't find an IFC or Panhellenic council here — the Greek system is built entirely around NPHC, and that shapes everything about how it operates on campus.

The organizations active on campus include some of the most historically significant names in Black Greek-letter history: Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma on the fraternity side, and Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta representing the sororities. That's the full lineup of Divine Nine fraternities and sororities, which is notable for a school of Livingstone's size.

At HBCUs, NPHC membership works differently than the rush process you'd see at a big state school. There's no formal recruitment week with open houses and bid day parties. Membership intake is more selective, often tied to academic standing and community involvement, and chapters tend to be smaller by design. That's just how NPHC operates — it's about quality of membership over volume.

On a small campus like Livingstone, the Greeks tend to be visible and involved in campus life. Step shows, yard events, and community service are typically the public-facing side of these organizations, and those traditions carry real weight in HBCU culture. Don't expect a Greek Row with chapter houses — that's not the model here. Chapters are more presence-based, gathering on the yard and making their mark through events and service rather than residential facilities.

The community is intimate, which means individual chapters can have an outsized impact on campus culture even with relatively small membership rosters.
