Langston University - LU Overview

  About Greek Life at LU

Langston University is one of the few HBCUs in Oklahoma, and its Greek system reflects the NPHC tradition you'd expect from a historically Black institution. The organizations here are all part of the Divine Nine — the nine historically Black fraternities and sororities that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council — and that's really the entire shape of Greek life on this campus.

On the fraternity side, you've got Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, and Kappa Kappa Psi represented. The sororities include Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta. There's no IFC or Panhellenic council here — NPHC is it, and that's pretty standard for an HBCU of this size.

Langston is a small school, so the Greek community is on the smaller side too. That means chapters tend to be tight-knit, and members are pretty visible on campus. Because enrollment is limited, you're not dealing with huge pledge classes or massive recruitment events the way you might at a big state school. NPHC intake processes are also structured differently than traditional IFC rush — they're typically more selective, less public, and happen on the chapter's timeline rather than a university-organized rush week.

At HBCUs generally, and Langston specifically, Greek-lettered organizations carry a lot of cultural weight. Step shows, probate reveals, and community service events are a real part of the social calendar. Chapters here tend to be active in philanthropy and campus programming, which is consistent with how Divine Nine orgs operate nationally. Don't expect Greek Row housing — most NPHC chapters at schools this size don't maintain chapter houses, and Langston follows that pattern.

Because the school itself is relatively small and located in a rural part of Oklahoma, Greek life is one of the more prominent social outlets on campus. Chapters here carry legacies that go back decades, and crossing into one of these organizations is treated as a serious commitment.
