Lane College - LC Overview

  About Greek Life at LC

Lane College is a small, historically Black liberal arts school in Jackson, Tennessee, and its Greek system reflects both that HBCU identity and that intimate campus size. All of the organizations here are NPHC — the National Pan-Hellenic Council — which is the council that oversees the nine historically Black fraternities and sororities, commonly called the Divine Nine. You won't find IFC or Panhellenic chapters here. This is a purely NPHC environment.

The fraternities represented on campus are Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma. On the sorority side, you've got Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta. That's a solid spread of the Divine Nine represented for a school this size.

NPHC intake processes work differently than traditional IFC or Panhellenic rush. There's no formal recruitment week with open houses and bid day. Instead, interest meetings and intake happen on each chapter's own timeline, often after you've been on campus for at least a semester. GPA requirements and community involvement matter a lot in the process.

At a school as tight-knit as Lane, Greek organizations carry real weight on campus. Strolling — the performance tradition where members showcase their fraternity or sorority through synchronized stepping and movement — is a big deal at HBCU schools, and Lane is no exception. Greek orgs here tend to be visible at campus events, in community service, and during homecoming, which is one of the biggest moments of the year at any HBCU.

Don't expect Greek Row or chapter houses. NPHC chapters traditionally don't operate residential houses the way IFC fraternities do, and that holds true here. The chapters exist through their members, their yard presence, and their campus programming rather than through a physical house.
