Indiana University South Bend - IUSB Overview

  About Greek Life at IUSB

IUSB is a commuter-focused campus on the north side of South Bend, Indiana, and its Greek system reflects that reality — it's a smaller, more intimate setup compared to what you'd find at the Bloomington flagship. That's not unusual for a regional campus like this one, and it shapes the whole character of how fraternities and sororities operate here.

There are a handful of active chapters on campus, split between fraternities and sororities. On the fraternity side, Alpha Sigma Phi and Delta Sigma Phi represent the IFC presence. For sororities, you've got Alpha Sigma Tau and Theta Phi Alpha under Panhellenic, along with Sigma Gamma Rho, which is an NPHC organization with roots in the historically Black Greek-letter tradition. So there's a mix of councils represented, even if the overall numbers are modest.

Don't expect a traditional "Greek Row" with chapter houses here. IUSB is primarily a commuter school, so most students are driving in from the South Bend area rather than living on campus. That changes how chapters function — events and recruitment tend to happen through campus programming spaces rather than house parties or live-in chapter life.

Rush and recruitment here are generally more low-key than what you'd see at a large residential university. Chapters typically table, host informational events, and connect with potential new members through campus involvement rather than formal multi-day recruitment weeks. Philanthropy and community service tend to be a core part of how these organizations stay visible and active on campus.

Greek life is more of a niche part of the social scene at IUSB than a dominant one. For students who do get involved, it tends to be a meaningful way to build community at a school where the commuter culture can otherwise make it harder to connect.
